The Participation and Expression Pillar confronts the most significant threats and opportunities to open society, spawned by changes in information technology. These include current trends in the fields of disinformation, hate speech and platform regulation. These technologies are transforming the ways governments and corporations exercise power, and the ways citizens communicate and mobilize to keep that power accountable and to make technology deliver on democratic dividends and more prosperous and equal societies.
The Program Officer – Information, Independent and Digital Media is an individual contributor role reporting directly to the Participation and Expression Program Manager and is responsible for developing, planning and implementing the Open Society-Africa strategy to confront digital authoritarianism, using a range of tools including grantmaking, advocacy, fellowships, litigation, and program-related investments. The role provides the program with technical and administrative services relating to projects/grants and program administration and implementation as well as a variety of support in the area of information collection.

The Communications Assistant is an individual contributor role providing day-to-day support across a variety of administrative areas.
The Communications Assistant supports senior stakeholders in the organization and executes tasks within established policies, procedures and guidelines. The incumbent’s tasks include, but are not limited to, coordinating schedules, planning meetings/events, and preparing materials.
As a Communications Assistant at Open Society-Africa, you will be responsible for:
• Supporting the implementation of the Communications strategy and interventions.
• Providing administrative and logistical support to the Communications portfolio.
• Supporting Communications-related events planning, organization and implementation.
• Maintaining databases, media lists and other important contacts.
• Providing support in maintaining web content and implementing social media strategies.

• The Emerging Voices Coordinator (Regional) works under the direct supervision of the Public Diplomacy Officer - Emerging Voices (PDO [EV]) . The position has no supervisory responsibilities. Coordinates Mission Public Diplomacy outreach to Emerging Voices audiences through the YALI (Young African Leaders Initiative) program and other emerging voices outreach and develops projects and events in Kenya and regionally. Works with YALI alumni to develop activities to engage EV audiences through focused community engagement programs. Designs, develops, identifies co-sponsors and funding sources, plans and oversees a range of outreach activities in support of Mission goals. Manages recruitment and placement for Kenyan YALI participants.
Education:
• University degree in communications, international relations, intercultural/multicultural studies, public policy, business administration, marketing, or local equivalent is required.
