The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a pan- African, feminist and membership-based network based in Nairobi with over 800 members across 48 African countries. FEMNET envisions an African society where gender equality is achieved, and women and girls enjoy all their rights and live in dignity.  FEMNET exists to facilitate and coordinate the sharing of experiences, ideas, information, and strategies for human rights promotion among African women’s organizations through networking, communication, capacity-building and advocacy at the regional and international levels. FEMNET was conceived in 1988 but formally registered in 1993 under Kenya’s applicable incorporation laws and/or regulations.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Ending Violence Against Women Girls Lead  (SRHR & EVAWG) Lead – FNT/EOI/11/2022

We are currently seeking to engage a passionate, dynamic, and enthusiastic SRHR expert, on a two year contract, to lead the SRHR thematic area. The holder of the position will report to the Policy and Programme Manager. This is a full-time position and will be based at FEMNET’s secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya.

Job purpose

The SRHR Lead will provide strategic leadership in technical design and management of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights projects; and ensure that  FEMNET SRHR  programs address the needs and aspirations of African Women and Girls; are grounded on Rights and Feminist principles; and embed intersectionality.The holder will work closely with diverse teams to formulate and implement the annual SRHR  work plan in accordance to FEMNET’s contractual obligations and internal policies as well as ensure quality and standard  reports are submitted on time and responding to strategy.

Functionally reports to: Policy and Programme Manager

Supervises: SRHR and EVAWG Coordinator and Officer

Terms of Reference

Main Duties include:

Program/Project Management

  • Design and implement SRHR projects to address the needs and aspirations of Women and Girls;
  • Embed intersectionality in FEMNET SRHR and EVAWG work by ensuring needs of women and girls in their diversity are justly represented
  • Lead and manage SRHR and EVAWG project trends analysis for agility and evolvement of programme strategies.
  • In collaboration with the finance team support drafting and monitoring of SRHR and EVAWG project budgets and prepare budget amendments where necessary.
  • Manage SRHR and EVAWG projects staff and support their development through performance-based management, leadership, and job design
  • Monitor and manage identified SRHR and EVAWG projects risks using accepted FEMNET frameworks

Monitoring Evaluation and Learning

  • Work closely with Monitoring and Evaluation Lead to ensure project(s) implementation is aligned monitoring and evaluation framework.
  • Facilitate timely monitoring and evaluation of SRHR and EVAWG projects.
  • Ensure SRHR project team prepare their quarterly and annual narrative and financial reports in line with the organization and projects M& E frameworks.

Policy, Advocacy and Research

  • Lead FEMNET evidence-based advocacy on SRHR and EVAWG Lead in generating advocacy evidence to high impact influencing, these may include but not limited to research project, policy paper and briefs, opinion pieces etc
  • Map all key spaces essential for influencing change in SRHR and EVAWG in the continent and in the globe
  • Facilitate African women’s meaningful and strategic participation in various national, sub-regional, regional and global spaces.
  • Lead and manage strategic partnerships with support from the Program Manager and Executive Director
  • Represent FEMNET in different advocacy and influencing spaces.

Resource Mobilization and Sustainability

  • Co-Lead and Coordinate resource mobilization through development of programme/project proposals, identifying and building mutually beneficial relationships with potential partners
  • Maintain good and strong relationships with all FEMNET donors.
  • Ensuring accountability and delivery of high impact programmes and co-lead in implementing the Resource Mobilization Strategy for SRHR and EVAWG portfolio.
  • Ensure effective and efficient financial and resource management of SRHR projects.

Support to Members

  • Provide technical expertise to Member organisations in design of SRHR projects;
  • Provide capacity building to members in SRHRs;

Information and Communication

  • Ensure timely and consistency project communication, within the team, staff, members, partners and general public.
  • Facilitate creative communication to advance SRHR and EVAWG in Africa
  • Work closely with communications team to ensure communication is effectively used as a tool to mobilize and organize African women and girls towards realization of SRHR.
  • Work closely with communication and branding team to ensure FEMNET became the go to organization when it comes to SRHR in Africa by producing and packaging robust, cutting edge communication products.
  • Work closely with communication team and partners to ensure FEMNET profile proactively and strategically, partners work on SRHR.

Minimum requirements, qualifications, skills and experience

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate or master’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Anthropology, Gender Studies or related field.
  • At least 5 years experiences in Project planning, Design and Management; including programme/project conceptualisation, development, resource mobilization, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Advanced training on issues of Human Rights, Women Rights, Social Justice, Law, and Sexual reproductive Health rights will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrate commitment and experience in gender and development and/or women’s human rights organising in Africa in all of its diversity—including a commitment to African women’s autonomy and choice and African Feminist Principles
  • Experience working at the African regional level and international levels including working with African Union Institutions/Organs and UN Bodies
  • Participatory monitoring and evaluation of programmes;
  • Fundraising for SRHR and Women Led and Rights related projects;
  • Advocating for policies in both national, regional and global spaces, Experience in managing partnerships and networks ; Strong oral and written communication skills to a wide range of audiences at local, regional and international levels.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate and work in both English and French.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently within Africa and internationally
