JOB DETAILS:
REDD+ has the potential to deliver social and environmental benefits that go beyond the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but which may also entail potential risks to people and the environment. To protect against these potential risks while promoting benefits, seven Cancun safeguards are in place that must be supported throughout the implementation of REDD+ actions.
Duties and responsibilities
• In accordance with the annual work plan of the UN-REDD programme, the consultant will be responsible for technical oversight to activities of the programme across Africa by performing the following tasks:
• Lead on the day-to-day development, implementation and reporting of activities of the programme across the Africa region:
• Implement UN-REDD activities in each country on the basis of 2022 and 2023 annual work plans,
• Provide inputs for UNEP and UN-REDD quarterly, semester and annual reporting,
• Liaise with sister agencies and UN-REDD partners to coordinate programme activities,
• Contribute to the Hiring, managing and backstop technical consultants to provide the programme with dedicated studies to support its activities,
• Review relevant documents and reports to provide inputs (e.g. UN-REDD, UNEP reports; consultants’ deliverables),
• Contribute to the UN-REDD communications and knowledge management team by sharing inputs on developed materials to
• enhance the visibility of the programme, internally among UNEP and externally among partners,
• Participate in knowledge exchange events,
• Lead and/or participates in field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
• Facilitate development and geographic and thematic expansion across Africa:
• Contribute to identification of strategic opportunities, needs and gaps to deliver UNEP contribution to the UN-REDD Results
• Framework, as well as the UNEP logical framework, for the 2021-2025 period,
• Guide the Africa team to transform these opportunities into concrete project ideas,
• Provide inputs and clearance to project documents before submission to donors.
• Oversight private sector investment related to forests and mitigation/Contribute to safeguards activities as defined in the 2022 and 2023 UN-REDD inception reports,

Qualifications/special skills
• Academic Qualifications:
• An advanced-level university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, forest policy, forest management, natural resources management, international development or environmental economics or related field is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• Experience:
• At least 7 years of professional experience in REDD+, forestry and climate mitigation, forest policy, forest management, climate change or ecosystem management or related fields, is required
