Position summary:
• The Senior Manager, Program Design and Development, East & Southern Africa is part of the Africa Department and will support the East and Southern Africa region to build its portfolios of Landscapes & Communities (L&C) projects. The postholder will work closely with the Regional Senior Director, Country Directors and Institutional Relations Manager for Africa to define and then develop concepts and proposals to grow the regional strategy and build partnerships to fund and implement it. This position can have supervisory responsibilities on specific projects.
Responsibilities:
Landscapes & Communities Strategic Development
• Contributes to the East and Southern Africa regional Landscapes & Communities strategy, based on Rainforest Alliance’s strategic plan 2023-30.
• Participates in the Rainforest Alliance regional priority setting for people and nature.
Project Development
• Supports identifying the fundraising opportunities of the regional Landscapes & Communities portfolio, in close collaboration with Institutional Relations. Markets Innovation and regional, country and project leads;
• Takes lead responsibility for developing selected strategic proposals for presentation to institutional donors and companies investing in Rainforest Alliance’s Landscapes & Communities work;
• Provides guidance to the development of proposals under direct leadership and responsibilities of other colleagues, as requested by Senior Director East and Southern Africa.
Project Implementation
• Builds capacity and coaches project managers and implementing partners on all aspects of the project cycle, supported by the Design, Monitoring, Evaluation, Research & Learning department (DMERL);
• Provides hands-on support to project managers and implementing partners in the early stages of project implementation to ensure compliance with institutional procedures and donor requirements and coordination with relevant internal teams;
• Serves as first line of support to the Senior Director East and Southern Africa and Country Directors in selected strategic projects;
• Engages and cooperates on strategic projects/ issues with main private and public sectors at regional and national levels, in close coordination with country and regional directors;
• Provides support on project work as requested by the Senior Director East and Southern Africa.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning
• Contributes to collecting and presenting of portfolio management information supported by the department DMERL and in coordination with project and program leads;
• Prepares and contributes to Landscapes & Communities monitoring and evaluation tools and reports and offers feedback to improve project design and implementation;
• Contributes to research, report publications and communication of Landscapes & Communities project outcomes, capturing new synergies for improving positioning and adding value to the organisation and its engagement with farmers and other key stakeholders;
• Participates in Integrated Landscape Management Community of Practice and other cross-learning events to contribute to Rainforest Alliance’s global learning on landscape-scale work.
Qualifications:
• Masters degree in natural resource management, forestry, agriculture or a related field, or equivalent professional qualification;
• At least 10 years’ experience in the development and execution of sustainability programs in agriculture, forestry or landscape management;
• At least 5 years of experience in a senior position working in or with agricultural commodity sectors, including with private sector;
• Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships of trust and confidence with national and international stakeholders and relevant platforms;
• Experience with project administration and budget development and implementation;
• At least 5 years of direct experience in preparing and implementing grants funded by bi-lateral and-or multi-lateral organizations, other donors and companies;
• Outstanding interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills in English. French and or Kiswahili is added advantage.
• Ability and willingness to travel at least 20% of the time nationally and internationally;
• Demonstrated commitment to the RA mission and values.
