The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) is a membership organization for African National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) registered as a legal entity under laws of the Republic of Kenya. NANHRI’s mission is to support, through national, sub‐regional, regional and international cooperation, the establishment, strengthening and development of NHRIs in Africa in order to enable them to more effectively undertake their mandate of human rights monitoring, promotion, protection and advocacy. Its vision is an Africa where every country has a well functioning NHRI established in accordance with the Paris Principles contributing meaningfully to a continent characterized by human rights culture and justice for all. NANHRI encourages and supports the establishment of strong and independent NHRIs in compliance with the Paris Principles.
NANHRI is seeking to recruit a Temporary Programmes Officer (PO) to be based in its Secretariat office in Nairobi, Kenya. The Network of African NHRIs hereby invites applications from hardworking, resourceful, responsible and dedicated candidates to fill the above‐stated position.
Purpose:
• To manage projects in accordance with NANHRI’s programme activities and strategic plan
• To facilitate the work of sub‐regional groups and working groups – if or when required by these groups.
Job Responsibilities:
• Provide the OM with overview and summary documents of the programmes with a view to strategizing, creating synergy, and facilitate fundraising.
• Be a driver in the formulation of project proposals and applications in support of the secretariat’s work.
• Coordinate and communicate with NANHRI members and partners on the implementation of projects to ensure projects are effectively and efficiently delivered.
• Facilitate information sharing, discussions and joint decision making in working groups of members when relevant
• Organize meetings, workshops and training events for members according to NANHRI’s action plan and overall strategy; including handling of logistics in cooperation with the admin and finance officers.
• When relevant, and in agreement with the Operations Manager, conduct research in areas within the work subject of the PO for the support of members.
• Rapporteuring and taking minutes of meetings and activities.
• Facilitate the implementation of projects undertaken by the secretariat with the financial support of donors
• Monitor and report on projects undertaken by the secretariat for both internal and external use.
• Collecting and analysing monitoring and evaluation data and preparing reports on the same for Operations Manager.
• Contribute to NANHRI communications ‐ e.g. to newsletter or for the website.
• Drafting partnership agreements as required, in close coordination with the Operations Manager and other NANHRI Staff.
• Maintain administrative systems, databases and proper files of all NANHRI activities in the area of work.
• Meet with partners and stakeholders according to need and in agreement with the Operations Manager.
• To contribute to and participate in NANHRI’s organisational strategic and annual planning processes.
• Other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager
Job Skills:
• Good understanding of human rights particularly on emerging human rights issues
• Excellent research, report writing and presentation skills
• Excellent computer skills in various computer packages
• Excellent working knowledge of English; a good working knowledge of French will be an added advantage
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Good organizational and analytical skills
• Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
• Honesty, transparency and a high level of integrity.
Job Qualifications:
• At least a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences, Law, Development studies or other related field.
• A Masters Degree in the same field will be an added advantage.
• At least three years experience working as a programmes officer in the human rights and social justice sector. Experience working in advocacy and legislation review will be an added advantage.
