Peace Brigades International (PBI) is a non-governmental organisation, which protects human rights and promotes nonviolent conflict transformation. We provide protection, capacity development and other support for threatened organisations, defenders and communities pursuing social justice and defence of human rights in areas of violent conflict. Our current field projects are in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Indonesia, Mexico and Nepal. PBI project work is supported by a network of 13 country groups in Europe, North America and Australia, who carry out volunteer recruitment, advocacy and fundraising, and by the international coordinating office based in Brussels. PBI uses a non-hierarchical model of organising and decisions are made by consensus. PBI is an independent, egalitarian, volunteer-based organization not affiliated to any religious or political institution.
PBI Kenya consists of a small team based in Nairobi. Current programmatic work is mainly in and around Nairobi, but may include travel to other areas in Kenya and the wider East African region. The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a Programme funded by the German Government to support non-violent conflict resolution.

PBI is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified Civil Peace Service Worker as Programme Manager to lead in the implementation of PBI Kenya’s programmatic work in conjunction with the Country Coordinator and a small team of current staff members. The Programme Manager will play a key role in providing managerial direction, oversight and consistent monitoring especially to the CPS programme, including related programmes and ongoing work dedicated to the protection of HRDs. Additionally, the Programme Manager will be responsible for providing emergency response to HRDs at risk and proactively engaging with PBI Kenya’s key stakeholders and main actors locally and internationally, to raise their capacity to defend human rights. .
Job Responsibilities:
• Provide oversight and lead on the strategic planning, monitoring, evaluation and management of PBI Kenya’s programmatic work in conjunction with the Country Coordinator and team, especially the CPS Programme.
• Manage the emergency response, including accompaniments, risk assessments and protection plans for HRDs at risk in cooperation with the team.
• Assist the Country Coordinator with donor reporting and lead on the input for the required reporting cycles as outlined by the Kenyan Government.
• Lead in managing and strengthening PBI Kenya’s relationship with key stakeholders and actors in Kenya, including government, security forces and diplomatic contacts.
• Coordinate production of PBI Kenya’s regular advocacy circulars, website content and other communication materials, both internal and external to PBI.
• Deliver training and other capacity building measures, where needed, to HRDs and other stakeholders in conjunction with the team.
• Closely monitor the political, human rights and social justice situation in Kenya to identify trends, inform project operations, and optimise advocacy efforts.
• Be responsible for Statutory requirements and NGO Board regulations.

Job Qualifications:
• At least three years’ work experience with international NGOs / Human Rights Organisations.
• Thorough understanding of the Kenyan political and social context with regard to Human Rights.
• Demonstrable experience in project management roles and in proactive and effective networking.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to function in highly stressful and/or threatening situations.
• Ability to work in multi-cultural teams and cross-cultural environments.
• High level of flexibility and willingness to work outside normal hours (evenings, weekends).
• Ability to work both in a team (in a consensus model) and independently.
• Good time management/ multitasking skills
• The position would suit an individual who is proactive, detail-oriented, shows initiative, and enjoys working with a small international team.
Desirable Qualifications
• Knowledge and experience in working with PBI would be of advantage.
• Experience working with W/HRD-Grassroots organisations.
• Knowledge of Kiswahili, Spanish, French or German would be an advantage.
