Job title: Private Equity Associate

The Role
Developing World Markets (DWM) specializes in asset management for microfinance and other socially positive businesses in developing countries. We have invested debt or equity in over 200 Inclusive Finance Institutions (IFINs) across more than 50 countries worldwide. The Private Equity team manages over USD $100 million in private equity capital and has raised and managed 2 PE funds.
DWM is seeking an Associate for its private equity team who will join a team of finance professionals with a strong impact mission and commitment to sustainable economic development. The Associate will work closely with the PE team to execute the firm’s equity strategy by originating and developing new client relationships and equity investments, by managing and overseeing the existing equity portfolio. The geographic coverage will include Africa and Asia (for new deal origination and execution) and support for portfolio management of existing Asia and Latin America investees. The role will require travel for due diligence and board and shareholders’ meetings. The role will report to the Vice President, Private Equity and the preferred location is DWM’s office in Nairobi or Delhi with the possibility of spending the first 6-12 months at DWM’s New York, NY office.

Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain detailed financial models, analyses, and processes for evaluating potential investments
• Lead monitoring, investor reporting, asset- and portfolio-level analyses
• Prepare and present detailed memorandums (e.g. investment proposals) for investment and exit opportunities
• Perform comprehensive and in-depth company, country and industry research
• Assist in deal negotiation and structuring and review of legal documentation
• Assist in drafting of transaction documents, marketing materials and memorandums and executing private equity transactions
• Facilitate and develop deal sourcing capabilities primarily in Africa and Asia and generate pipeline for equity investments in line with fund strategy and impact thesis
• Participate in due diligence trips abroad to assess potential portfolio companies
• Evaluate exit opportunities for current portfolio
• Support the active management of portfolio companies, including development and implementation of strategic initiatives, such as debt and equity raising, senior management selection and training, product development, strategic partnerships, ongoing operational and financial performance, and others
• Support the design, streamlining of investment strategies, including investment process templates, etc. for existing and upcoming PE funds
• Support fund raising, concept development and LP marketing, due diligence efforts
• Interact with the risk, fund management, debt and capital markets teams on equity transactions and projects
• Manage special projects as necessary
• Be a subject matter expert in areas of financial inclusion, forced displacement, impact investing, etc. which are relevant to DWM’s mission
Qualifications
• Three to five years of experience in investment banking, asset management, private equity, management consulting, and/or deal-oriented financial analysis; emerging markets experience is preferred
• A college or graduate degree; a financial or business-related concentration and/or MBA/CFA is a plus but not required
• Interest and commitment to impact investing and social/economic development
• Knowledge of or experience in the microfinance or financial institutions sector
• Demonstrated significant quantitative skills (including financial modeling and valuation skills), strategic, creative and critical thinking abilities
• Strong understanding of financial statements and advanced MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills; SQL or other data analysis language knowledge is a plus
• Ability to manage multiple high priority projects and work effectively both as an individual and as part of a team
• Strong work ethic and attention to detail, comfort with dynamic, hands-on work environment in multiple geographies
• Must be a self-starter, show mature personal and deal judgment and ability to represent firm in private and public events
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proof of ability to work in the U.S. (if spending first 6-12 months in the U.S. office)
