Overview
The Accountability and Responsiveness in Informal Settlements for Equity (ARISE) research consortium aims to increase accountability for marginalised people working and living in informal settlements to claim their rights to health across cities in Kenya, Sierra Leone, India, and Bangladesh. Whilst the Kenyan government has made efforts to reduce inequities in health outcomes at a national level, urban informal settlements and particularly vulnerable groups within them are being left behind. Using Community Based Participatory
Research (CBPR) approaches, the project is exploring inequities within informal settlements and has
identified vulnerable populations. The ARISE partners in Kenya seek to recruit a Specialist to support ARISE
teams to analyse and synthesise Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) data from different activities and between different teams.
Position Summary
• The MEL Specialist will support the development of a MEL system and provide related capacity building and technical assistance to partners in the ARISE project including support to assess the ARISE theory of change.
• S/he will convene and document meetings including reflexivity sessions with community co-researchers,
• using ripple effect mapping. S/he will be responsible for monitoring data for non-research activities,
• generating progress reports and conducting Key informant interviews with governance stakeholders at
• community, city and county levels. The holder of this position will be based at the LVCT Health Offices in
• Nairobi, with frequent interactions with ARISE Kenya partners and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
• (LSTM).
Roles and responsibilities
• The MEL Specialist will carry out the following responsibilities with the support of the ARISE MEL Lead
• Principal Investigators (PIs), and all research team members:
• Develop the tools, process, data sets, etc. needed to operationalize the MEL plan.
• Conduct thematic analysis of existing data and map the ARISE Kenya Theory of Change
• Synthesise data across multiple sources to report against ARISE Kenya Theory of Change
• Contribute toward continuous review of approaches used to implement activities and advise
• Conduct limited primary data collection to support contribution analysis (e.g. interviews with
• key stakeholders)
• Participate in high-level stakeholder events and generate reports aligned to the ARISE Kenya
• Theory of Change
• Participate in monthly MEL working group meetings
• Participate in MEL activities within LVCT Health
Qualifications and Experience
• MA / MSc in a relevant discipline such as Social Science, Public Health or Epidemiology.
• At least 3 years of health research experience in collecting and analyzing qualitative and
• quantitative research data.
• Training and experience in MEL approaches, especially participatory MEL
• Experience supporting organizations to improve their MEL capacities including assessing and
• helping develop theories of change and MEL systems
• Experience working in urban informal settlements
• Experience working in health and/or well-being
• Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications and software for quantitative and
• qualitative analysis.
• Excellent writing and communication skills)
Desirable characteristics
• Peer-reviewed publishing in reputable journals will be an advantage.
• Experience working with Government Officials and Departments is an added advantage
Terms of Employment
This will be a one year fixed term contract, with a possibility for renewal.
