Senior Researcher and Content Producer

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment's mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UN Environment's Communications Division communicates UNEP’s core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

Under the supervision of the Head of Multimedia, the Senior Multimedia Producer and Researcher (Internal Comms, Projects and Campaigns) will perform the following duties:

  • Drive multimedia production, including scripting and research, for Internal Comms, Projects and Campaigns
  • Liaise with Account Managers to identify, commission and manage the production of multimedia outputs
  • Refine, develop and produce Key Message and Presenter-driven Explainer formats
  • Produce user generated content
  • Develop a strategy and blueprint to improve the impact and reach of the YouTube and data management platforms, restructure and run the platforms
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policies and practice.

Qualifications/special skills

  • A master's degree in media management, video production, communications, or other related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master's degree.
  • At least five years of experience working in multimedia production, film making and/or video for high-quality platforms. Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and other Creative Suite software is required.
  • Prior experience shooting video and still photography on DSLR cameras and drone/aerial filming experience is desirable.
  • Familiarity with 360 films and short-form video productions for social media use. Prior experience in the international arena, familiarity with the work of the UN is desirable.

Programme Management Officer, P4

This post is located in the Biodiversity, People and Landscapes Unit in the Biodiversity and Land Branch (BLB), Ecosystems Division, at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Unit, the incumbent will will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Collaboration with international, regional and national organizations and international experts, as well as with other UNEP technical teams, the FAO and other UN agencies on joint projects/actions on issues related to ecosystem management in productive landscapes.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates assigned programmes/projects related to food systems, IPLCs and landscape conservation and management; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
  • In collaboration with the UNEP Global Environment Facility (GEF) team, promote, coordinate and support the development of new GEF projects that are complementary to the UNEP Programme of Work, including in the Great Green Wall region and facilitate and support the technical integration and alignment of the existing UNEP-GEF projects.
  • Select, recruit and supervise project consultants.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
  • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences,to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements,) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in natural resources management, conservation, agricultural science or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in terrestrial ecosystem related programmes and/or projects including at least three (3) years working at the international level and working with developing countries is required.
  • At least three (3) years experience working on integrated teams working on biodiversity, food, and agriculture is required.
  • Experience working with indigenous people and local communities is required.
  • Supervisory experience managing multi-cultural teams is desirable.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable

Marine Litter Consultant

The consultant will provide drafts of all deliverables for review, and final versions where all comments and inputs are incorporated, based on work plan agreed by the COBSEA Secretariat and relevant partners. All deliverables are to be developed and finalized based on UNEP and COBSEA visibility guidelines and considerable requirements of donors or partner agencies. The consultant is responsible for maintaining regular communications with the COBSEA Secretariat and providing progress and information as well as all background resources/data/information collected for the preparation of all deliverables under this contract in editable and accessible formats adhere to UN values and codes of conducts, respect the intellectual property rights of the UN and follow a human rights-based and inclusive approach.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the COBSEA Secretariat and the COBSEA Working Group on Marine Litter, and in coordination with project partners, the consultant will perform the following tasks:

Management and implementation of the project, including pilot activities

This includes:

  • Developing and monitoring of partner agreements and liaison with project partners under the guidance of the Programme Officer on Marine Litter in the COBSEA Secretariat;
  • Developing a GANTT chart of project activities, including partner activities, continuous tracking of implementation and budget use, and identifying any risks and challenges;
  • Providing regular progress updates to the COBSEA Secretariat, WGML, project partners and donors;
  • Developing information material on project activities and outcomes for internal/external reporting and outreach, such as presentation slides and input to newsletters;
  • Developing the final project report in line with the donor agreement with guidance from the COBSEA Secretariat.

Develop a toolbox on ghost gear recovery and management in coordination with project partners

This includes:

  • Consultations with partners, stakeholders and potential users on the format, content and accessibility of the toolbox to inform development;
  • Identifying/confirming sites, activities and implementing partners for pilot activities in consultation with COBSEA Secretariat and regional partners;
  • Coordination with project partners toward enhancing 1 to 2 pilot activities on ghost gear recovery and management;
  • Developing case studies and videos to showcase 1 to 2 pilot activities and build capacity for replication, in coordination with project partners and the project video editor/designer;
  • Identifying 2 to 4 additional good practices from the COBSEA region for replication/scaling up and developing case studies including through desk research and interviews with relevant stakeholders/agencies;
  • Coordinating the development of guidance resources on sustainable ghost gear recovery and management for communities and/or tourism businesses (such as dive operators) in collaboration with project partners;
  • Conceptualizing the format, coordinating the design, and compiling resources of the toolbox, to provide practical guidance and replicate good practices for dissemination through UNEP and COBSEA channels and the East Asian Seas Regional Node of the GPML.
  • Coordinate a regional event on ghost gear prevention and gear marking.

This includes:

  • Developing a concept note, programme and participant list for the regional event in coordination with project partners;
  • Making logistical arrangements for the event in close coordination with the COBSEA Secretariat and project partners;
  • Preparation of event materials, presentations and talking points;
  • Implementation of the event, including giving presentations, moderating, and leading discussions;
  • Development of outcome documents in consultation with participants and partners, under the guidance of the Programme Officer on Marine Litter in the COBSEA Secretariat;
  • Developing a meeting summary with key outcomes and action points in collaboration with project partners

Qualifications/special skills

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in environmental sciences, sustainable development, waste management or other relevant field is required. A first level university degree with additional two years of qualifying experience maybe accepted in lieu of Advanced degree.
  • At least 7 years of working experience in waste management, environmental policy and management, or sustainable development, preferably in relation to marine litter, plastic pollution or solid waste management is required;
  • Experience of environmental policy and management in the East Asian Seas region is desirable;
  • Experience in planning and managing complex projects and programmes is desirable
  • Experience in knowledge management, communication and outreach is an asset;
  • Experience working with bilateral/multilateral donors and development partners in the East Asian Seas is an asset;
  • Experience working with government officials, local authorities, community stakeholders, non-governmental organizations, and waste management entities is desirable;
  • Working experience in a multicultural environment including United Nations is an asset;
  • Previous involvement in and knowledge of Regional Seas and/or COBSEA work is desirable
