Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Administrative Assistant - Kisumu

Key Responsibilities:

  • To effectively plan, organize, and administer the activities of the projects.
  • Making orders for clinical, laboratory and logistical study supplies and equipment using the appropriate methods
  • Maintain study records and ensure integrity of data and information.
  • Keeping and tracking staff leave schedule
  • Booking for facilities to be used for training, meetings and writing minutes during meetings
  • Keep accurate records of financial transactions for money advanced for project use and submit expenditure documents for accounting purposes.
  • Ensuring availability of adequate supplies in the field sites
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment as appropriate
  • Organize transport and logistics operations including booking travel and processing allowances for project staff as appropriate
  • Undertake other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor

Vacancy Requirements:

  • Diploma in any of the following disciplines: Business Management, Human Resource     
  • Management, Business Administration, or any other approved equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.     
  • Proficiency in written and verbal English & Kiswahili     
  • Certificate in Computer Application Skills from a recognized institution.

  • Must be flexible to work within the existing structure.

Clerical Officer (Interviewer)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer informed consent to potential participants in accordance with GCP and HSP guidelines.
  • Collect quality data using tablet-based data entry platforms.
  • Ensure that the data collection is conducted in compliance with study protocol and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that equipment, supplies and other materials necessary for successful conduct of the field work are available as/when required.
  • Provide progress reports and solve reported problems encountered in the field to the supervisor.
  • Perform any other study-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Vacancy Requirements:

  • O-Level secondary education with a minimum grade of a D+ (plus)     
  • Minimum of one (1) year working experience doing community health work with good understanding of MOH community health strategies and roles, data collection and management.     
  • Excellent knowledge and working experience with Microsoft Office suite, tablet-based data entry platforms.     
  • Working knowledge of Good Clinical Practice, human subjects research, and related clinical trial regulatory requirements     
  • Experience in managing and ensuring data quality.     
  • Fluency in English and Swahili, written and spoken. Fluency in the local language (Luhya) spoken in the study area will be an .

Principal Biostistician/Bioinformatics

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participation in capacity building on bioinformatics by guiding MSc and PhD students on the project in both Kenya and Benin
  • In charge of reception and storage of raw sequence data from the sequencing facilities, uploading to the high compute servers
  • Take leadership in setting up virtual classroom discussions; small group discussions; data carpentry workshops, personalized virtual office hours with trainees on the statistical analyses of genomic data
  • Participation in designing, review and update of the vector genomics and bioinformatics training curriculum
  • Leadership in conceptualizing, innovating and development of new bioinformatic pipelines for analysis of genomic data
  • Conduct bioinformatic analysis of raw sequence data to identify molecular markers associated with insecticide resistance in malaria vectors
  • Attend conferences and workshops to disseminate research findings
  • Leadership in drafting of technical reports, manuscripts, and outcomes of the project outputs
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the principal investigator

Vacancy Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics; Statistics, Medical Statistics, Biostatistics, Health statistics, Biometry or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institution     
  • Expertise in genomics, population genetics, data science, computational biology     
  • Hands on experience with scripting languages such as Linux, Python, R and a strong grounding in biological sciences     
  • Familiarity with commonly used tools for variant detection (samtools, bowtie2, BWA, IGV, ANNOVAR, GATK) and file formats (BED, VCF, FASTQ, BAM, FASTA)     
  • Familiarity with commonly used and publicly available bioinformatics databases (e.g. GenBank, Uniprot, DDBJ, Ensemble, GEO, SRA, ExAC, ESP,ClinVar, VectorBase, KEGG, HGMD, OMIM, PubMed, UCSC)     
  • Experience designing bioinformatics experiments and/or providing oversight for the design of 'omics/bioinformatics experiments.

Programmer

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement data capture, management, analysis and reporting tools and systems
  • Trouble shoot, modify/improve already existing electronic systems, train data and field personnel on developed/modified tools and systems.
  • Ensure the current systems are connected to various databases with the main ones being MS-SQL.
  • Deal with routine problems arising during data handling.
  • Work with other team members and investigators on various tasks as requested.

Vacancy Requirements:

  • BSc in computer science/information technology or related field

  • Knowledge of Visual Basic® and other programming languages in the NET environment.

Clinical Officer

Job Description

This is the entry and training grade in this cadre. An officer at this level will work underguidance and supervision of a senior officer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the study’s goals and activities to conduct the study
  • Perform screening & consenting and enrollment of participants,
  • Perform physical examination, take medical history, prescribe medication and make follow up of enrolled participants
  • Make diagnoses and decisions on patient’s management according to study protocols and the recommended national guidelines
  • Document applicable study data during all study procedures
  • Clinically manage ill participants and conduct clinical procedures including venipuncture, insertion of IV cannulas and collect biological samples when necessary
  • Perform screening and assessment of study participant in terms of motor, cognitive, language and social-emotional development using CREDI and BSID tools.
  • Respond to and resolve queries about participants’ information documented in the study files
  • Any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor

Vacancy Requirements:

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine.     
  • Higher National Diploma in pediatrics an added advantage.     
  • Registered and with a valid practicing license from the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya     
  • At least 1 year combined post-internship pediatric clinical experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in identification of potential participants
  • Consent and recruit eligible participants
  • Schedule participants for follow ups
  • Complete study forms accurately & completely
  • Ensure he/she has the requisite supplies in good time
  • Work closely with the data team to resolve queries
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive research information
  • Participate in monthly program meetings
  • Relate well with MOH staff and CHVs and the community
  • Perform any other duties assigned/delegated by the immediate supervisor.
