JOB DETAILS:
Intern - Peace and Development, I
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office, and the internship period.
Under the supervision of the National Peace and Development Officer, the intern will:
Provide timely and effective research and analysis of issues related to peace and development in Kenya.
• Support literature review of policies, laws, regulations, and strategies on peacebuilding and prevention in Kenya.
• Prepare background papers on thematic issues in Prevention and Sustaining Peace.
• Prepare briefing papers on the situation in the Horn of Africa and the implications for Kenya.
• Participate in research and mediation activities by the Peace and Development Unit and support the preparation of reports.
• Support preparation of presentations, including visualization of data.
Support monitoring of the PDU workplan and results reporting.
• Support the strengthening of partnerships with stakeholders and assist the PDU Team to maintain an updated database of key contacts within the Government, development partners, and Civil society.
• Support planning and organizing of webinars or face-to-face workshops and roundtables in close collaboration with the PDU Team and support other partnerships-related activities as needed.
Promote analysis and information-sharing.
• Support the organization of mediation training.
• Contribute to the drafting of reviews, lessons learned, and best practice reports.
• Support documentation of the work of the Peace and Development Unit in close collaboration with the RCO Communications Specialist.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
• Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
• Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
• Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
• Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies:
• in International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Management Studies, Public Administration, or a related field.

Work Experience
• No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
• Experience in Supporting literature review of policies, laws, regulations, and strategies on peacebuilding and prevention is required.
• Experience in preparing background papers on thematic issues in Prevention and Sustaining Peace is desirable.
• Experience in planning and organizing webinars or face-to-face workshops and roundtables is desirable.
