Job Purpose:
This position will report to the Chief Information and Data Officer and it provide organizational leadership and is responsible for overseeing the activities of the jata science department team in ensuring execution of and alignment with the Kenya Airways’ overall vision. The role requires hands on leadership necessary to grow a team through the startup phase into a mature data led organization. The position ensures creation of data science capabilities for the success of Kenya Airways business operations by envisioning and executing strategies that will influence improvement of business performance by enabling decision making.
The Head of Data Science and Analytics proactively works with departmental heads across Kenya Airways to provide advanced data modelling systems. The Head of Data Science and Analytics designs and launches innovative and complex analytic models, utilizing a blend of contemporary and traditional data mining techniques, applied to both structured and unstructured data.
The position holder will lead the development of big data capabilities and utilization core objective is to deliver resilient and secure technology services whilst driving continuous improvement to ensure consistent customer satisfaction.

Principal Accountabilities:
Leadership and Supervision;
• Responsible for leading innovation within the business by defining how the business creates additional value through utilization of data assets and analytics.
• Consistently identify and monitor key business risks and realizing the data needs of the business.
• Lead and manage the junior data science and analysts’ team and oversee all activities ensuring alignment of departmental and business-wide vision and strategies.
• Drive education and evangelization of data sciences throughout KQ by communicating the vision and use cases of advanced analytics.
• Manage the business’s external data and analytics partners.
• Develop and design the departmental vision, capabilities, infrastructure, and roadmap for the launch of data sciences capabilities.
• Build the business’s data science talent needs through role definition, recruitment, and development of a team of data scientists that will jointly move the business’s agenda forward.
Strategy;
• Continuously improving the business’s data analysis model, creating industry-leading performance through the leveraging of new and creative data-sources, and employing the latest in machine learning.
• Develop a roadmap for the data and analytics function that clearly defines ownership and responsibility between the central data function and the functional groups.
• Scope, design and implement machine-learning models to support the business’s numerous initiatives and programs with a view of achieving overall objectives and targets.
• Create a common data framework so that all company data can be analyzed in a unified manner.
Collaboration;
• Collaborate with all functions of KQ to ensure data needs are addressed and the required data is modeled and available to analysts and users.
• Work with a team of data analysts and data warehouse engineers to create big data applications through the utilization of structured.
Analytics;
• Drive experimental data modeling designs within the business.
• Create and execute a plan to develop and mature KQ’s to measure and optimize data usage growth, mapped to our user journey.
• Work with the product, operations, and executive management teams to create a data enabled user journey.
• Ensure the airline’s cloud and on-premises data is centralized into a single data lake and modeled to support data analysis requirements for all functional groups within KQ.
• Develop data models to track business performance against data analysis model and monitor trends in key business KPIs, providing valuable insights to relevant departments for overall business performance improvement.
Knowledge Management;
• Conduct exploratory data analyses and experimental designs, which will help KQ to better understand trends and settle on the most suitable data strategies to drive success.
Systems Compliance;
• Develop a roadmap and clear data framework for the data and analytics function that clearly defines ownership and responsibility between the central data functional groups.
• Close all Technology internal and external Audit findings and implement recommendations accordingly.
• Ensure that software licensing laws are adhered to, and the organization does not violate copyright laws e.g., Microsoft licenses, Application Licenses & ERP, Database Licenses- Oracle.
• Ensure license, registrations, renewals, etc. related to data operations and/or services are accurately and timely completed.
• Ensure that all Airline’s systems can communicate with the data warehouse and that business data adheres to a unified data model.
Supplier and Vendor Relationship Management – Sourcing;
• Negotiate and manage Service Level Agreements contracts with the various Data Science and Analytics service partners.
Outsourcing;
• Identify Data Science and Analytics activities that require outsourcing and enhance value of technology support, to ensure maximum value for KQ.
Budget;
• Develop capital and expense budget estimates, prepare work plans, and determine budget requirements for all Data Science and Analytics support activities.

Knowledge, Skills and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or any other related quantitative field Graduate in IT or related field. A Master’s degree in IT related filed will be an added advantage.
• Highly proficient and experienced in scripting languages and have rapid prototyping skills, that is, fluency in SQL, Python, Perl, Java, VB, among others.
• Minimum 7 years’ of working experience in a senior data science position.
• Experience working with open-source data analytics tools, machine learning, experimental design, and optimization.
• Highly skilled in statistical and modeling packages such as SAS, Statistica, Matlab, visualization, and other advanced analysis tools.
• A proven and successful track record of leading high-performing data analyst teams through the successful performance of advanced data analytics that positively impact business performance.
• Experience working with multiple executive level business stake holders.
• Superior team leadership, team working and co-operation skills with the ability to influence positively and champion high performance.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal & analytical skills with the ability to work confidently on high priority problems.
• Ability to handle pressure and difficult situations with resilience, calmly and effectively.
• Must be a person of unquestionable integrity.
