Our client is a Financial Service Company that focuses on wholesale lending to institutions and strategic firms across various sectors such as microfinance institutions, real estate, agribusiness, fintech and manufacturing sectors mainly in Kenya and in Eastern Africa. They have identified that lack of capital is still the largest constraint to SME growth in Kenya and East Africa and therefore wishes to establish a fund that seeks to provide capital for institutions offering profitable products across the region. Large financing gaps exist across various sectors in the region which are under-served compared to their credit needs and contribution to the economy. They are therefore poised to play a significant role in providing alternative sources of debt financing to businesses across various sectors of the economy. Our client wishes to recruit a Financial Risk Manager.
JOB SUMMARY
The aim role will be to analyze the risks associated with lending to potential clients and major business decisions in advance and thus provide a solid basis for strategic orientation. The analysis relates to various areas, such as market conditions and developments, interest and inflation risks or the expected economic situation
The Risk Manager will oversee the organizations comprehensive insurance and risk management program, assessing and identifying risks that could impede the safety, security, or financial success of the organization.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
As a financial risk manager you will need to advise on the Organization’s core business by;
• Devising effective risk management strategies
• Make risk assessments on potential clients, which involves analysing risks as well as identifying, describing and estimating the risks affecting their business
• Evaluate risk, which involves comparing estimated risks with criteria established by the organisation such as costs, legal requirements and environmental factors, and evaluate previous handling of risks
• Establish and quantify the organisation’s ‘risk appetite’, i.e. the level of risk they are prepared to accept and how that may impact their ability to service the loan
• Undertake corporate governance involving external risk reporting to stakeholders
• Carry out processes such as purchasing insurance, implementing health and safety measures, and making business continuity plans to limit risks and mitigation measures
• Conduct audits of policy and compliance to standards, including liaison with auditors
• Provide support, education and training to staff to build risk awareness within the organisation.
• Anticipate and analyze prevailing market trends at any particular period
• Calculate all risks related to business and transaction proposals
• Employ computer programs related to statistical analysis for proper risk assessment and analysis
• Formulate contingency plans for the organization
• Recommend to the organization improvement precautionary measures
• Offer professional assistance and advice on related mathematical models that help the organization to valuate financial instruments, optimize problems, and model market behaviors
• Guide the company regarding Asset and Liability management for end-to-end basis in areas like ALM operating model redesign and review, system implementation and policy review
• Establish and implement interest rate risk in liquidity and banking book risk system for end-to-end basis
• Build and maintain good relationship with all decision makers regarding key clients
KEY REQUIREMENTS
• Experience of 7+ years in a similar role
• A degree in any of the following subjects is vital and should be included
• Risk Management
• Management or Business Studies
• Finance or Economics
• Science
• Statistics
• Engineering
• Law

• Possess excellent understanding of banking and financial regulations
• Possess good skills in PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and other Microsoft Office packages
• Analytical skills and an eye for detail
• Commercial awareness

• Ability to understand broader business issues and changing environments.
