JOB DETAILS:

Role purpose
• To deliver professional advice and support to enable Syngenta East Africa Flowers sites to effectively manage and promote all aspects of HSE.
• To effectively assess and communicate the East Africa sites’ needs to the Business and to AME / Regional HSE Leadership Teams, and corporate HSE strategy to the local Leadership Teams
• To provide advice, support, training and development to enable other local HSE colleagues deliver professional support to the business functions in which they are employed
• To provide validation, audit and assessment that required HSE standards are adopted throughout the East Africa Flowers sites
Accountabilities
• To deliver advice and support on the operational aspects of the Syngenta HSE strategy across all business functions of Kenya Pollen site
• To establish a strong East Africa sites HSE network to maximize shared learning opportunities and support local HSE colleagues across the sites to further develop their knowledge and capabilities.
• To ensure local Site Leadership teams have the necessary information and professional advice to enable them to deliver HSE compliance (local and Syngenta) and appropriate mitigation and control strategies within their functional and geographic areas of accountability.
• To ensure KPI, monitoring, internal audit and reporting processes are in place across the sites to provide local, business function and regional visibility of HSE performance.
• To identify and signal to the AME and/ or Regional HSE Leadership Teams where specialist HSE support is required
• To deliver advice and support to ensure local incident investigations identify true root causes, contain sufficient detail and quality to enable timely validation when first submitted.
• Build and lead local internal and external communication networks and working relationships to ensure that employees are involved and engaged with all aspects of HSE, and the site License To Operate is protected
• Design, implement and lead a behavioral based safety programme for all 3 sites to build a strong safety culture across all functions and teams
• If requested, to support the AME BU HSE manager to conduct Syngenta audits and reviews in Syngenta sites and at 3rd Parties according to the agreed Global, Regional and Business Unit audit plans

Qualifications

Critical knowledge
• Bachelors' Degree in Science, Engineering, Agriculture or related Technical subject
• Strong working knowledge of existing and developing relevant HSE legislation (national/ international)
• Appropriate national/international qualification in HSE management (e.g. i-NEBOSH) or a specialist HSE discipline
• Project and change management skills and experience
Critical Experience
• 5 years’ experience of Health, Safety or Environmental management, preferably within a multi-national company
• Experience of self-learning and then delivering Information, Instruction and training to a wide range of audiences from shop floor to Business Unit Management teams
• Proven track record of delivering projects

Critical Technical, Professional and Personal Capabilities
• Strong Communication, Interpersonal & Influencing Skills
• Concern for standards and ability to defend a position in the event of challenge
• Fluency in written and oral English
• Fluency in another local language (desirable)
• Competent and capable of training others in standard HSE processes: Incident Investigation, Risk Assessment, Identifying and developing appropriate mitigation, audit, etc…
• Code of Conduct: ability to understand and apply the Syngenta Code of Conduct in any situation that confronts them

Critical success factors & key challenges
• Build the credibility of HSE function within the Sites and Business Leadership Teams.
• Establish an effective network of HSE contacts across the Sites and the region
• Drive the local delivery of the Sites’ HSE Improvement Plans

Additional Information
• Role holder will be expected to travel regularly to Kenya Cuttings (Thika) and Ethiopia Cuttings (Koka) sites, periodically to other Syngenta and 3rd party locations within East Africa and may occasionally be requested to travel to other sites and countries within EAME region.
