JOB DETAILS:
APNI’s evidence initiative (https://youtu.be/giz-YwvHyfc) is to gather and use high quality evidence to improve the effectiveness of systems-level plant nutrition interventions. Our guiding principle is to participate in open science to make scientific research and data accessible to all. APNI is working toward six (6) goals: 1) catalog existing crop nutrition interventions on the African continent; 2) generate systematic maps, reviews, and meta-analyses from published data; 3) archive new and legacy data in repositories using FAIR principles; 4) develop a quality management system for our crop nutrition experiments; 5) create powerful designs for field trials and conduct appropriate analyses; and 6) propose and test new approaches to improving crop nutrition.
Responsibilities
• The data scientist will support APNI’s evidence initiative (see above) and work closely with a network of APNI’s collaborating institutions, including International Agricultural Research Centers, National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems, the private sector, and development organizations.
• Data wrangling (structure, standardization, and cleaning).
• Using and contributing to ontologies in the OBO Foundry (http://www.obofoundry.org/) to label and describe data.
• Publishing data sets in open repositories such as Gardian (https://gardian.bigdata.cgiar.org/#!/)
• Using open-access tools to create tailored data acquisition forms on smartphones, such as KoBo Toolbox (https://www.kobotoolbox.org/) and KDSmart (https://www.kddart.org/kdsmart.html).
• Working with APNI and its partners to develop a quality control and quality assurance program
• Develop training materials for APNI staff
Qualification
• A Master of Science degree in Data Science (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
• Expertise in R (tidyverse, markdown, R Studio)
• Expertise in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, data validation, formulas)
• Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written. The candidate may be a contributing author to peer-reviewed publications.
• Desire to continue to develop professionally in data science as well as in life sciences
• Willingness to collaborate with APNI scientists and their partnering organizations to create solutions that serve the broader communities of interest.
• In addition to the above requirements, preference will be given to candidates who also has experience in:
• Open source, open access GIS software (data acquisition, interpolation, raster calculations)
• GitHub (archiving and versioning)
• Written and oral proficiency in English. Knowledge of French is an added advantage
