Consultant for Mid Term Evaluation - Kenya Challenge Fund project
Overview
Self Help Africa (SHA)-Kenya is a dynamic international organization based in Nairobi with its headquarters in Ireland and programmes reach to 17 countries worldwide, 15 of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, SHA’s track record stretches over 15 years working with smallholder farmers, farmer associations, cooperatives and small and medium size enterprises in the agribusiness sector to help them enhance their production, diversify their diet/ income/ agricultural activities to attract better prices for their products through value addition and improved marketing.
SHA’s approach to agricultural development is based on technical expertise, extensive experience of project implementation, and evidence of best practice from the wider development community.
SHA also works to raise awareness of smallholder farmers’ issues and represents their interests at policy and institutional levels. Currently, SHA works in more than 40 counties spread out in all the regions of Kenya.
The AgriFI Kenya Challenge Fund is a European Union and SlovakAid initiative co-managed by SHA and Imani Development Ltd, It is an Euros 18 million Fund which supports productive and market-integrated smallholder agriculture through the provision of awards to Agri enterprises. AgriFI aims to improve the capacity of smallholder farmers/pastoralists to practise environmentally sustainable and climate-smart agriculture as a business in inclusive value chains.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing long term local currency financing to Equity Bank (Kenya) Limited for on-lending to eligible AgriFI projects as part of a blending finance scheme in which successful awardees were expected to leverage investment from Equity Bank as a Matching Fund. Hence, the blended finance facility consists of the competitive grants to business plans for value chain development and smallholders’ integration; and the match-funding mechanism.
The funded projects are in value chains such as dairy, horticulture, grains, nuts, livestock, aquaculture, honey, input supply, cotton, pyrethrum, gum arabic, coffee, potatoes and essential oils. Already, more than 100,000 smallholder farmers and pastoralist have benefitted from improved access to markets, input supplies, credit facilities and CSA trainings as part of the farmer integration. The funded projects seek to explore opportunities and address some of the barriers that inhibits smallholder farmers/pastoralists from competitively participating in agricultural value chains. Examples of initiative supported include farmers training on climate adaptation, capacity development, equipment investments, improvement of quality standards, participatory research and marketing and branding investments among others.
The Challenge Fund is part of the wider AgriFI programme funded under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) to unlock, accelerate and leverage investments within value chains in Kenya. The wider AgriFi programme consists of a Food Safety component managed by MESPT and the Climate Smart Agricultural Productivity Project managed by KALRO.
