Job Description
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the world’s leading humanitarian relief and development organizations. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people survive, recover, and rebuild their lives. The IRC delivers emergency aid, protects children, provides health care, prevents, and responds to violence against women and girls, safeguards human rights and helps to kick-start economic recovery. At work today in over 35 countries and in 16 US cities, the IRC restores hope and opportunity to millions of people. IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC is committed to a culture of bold leadership, innovation in all aspects of our work, creative partnerships and, most crucially, accountability to those we serve. The IRC is a tireless advocate for the most vulnerable.
ReBUiLD Microenterprise Support
The Refugees in East Africa: Boosting Urban Innovations for Livelihoods Development (ReBUiLD) project is implementing a Cash and Mentorship research/ Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) within its microenterprise support track in Nairobi. Aspiring businesspeople (mentees) are linked with experienced businesspeople (mentors) for a 2.5-month long mentorship period. During this period, the IRC will disburse cash grants to the clients and observe them over a period of up to 12 months.
To determine feasibility of the RCT design, the IRC conducted 2 pilots. Mentors underwent a half-day-training and were introduced to their mentees. Findings from the pilots revealed communications constraints between certain refugee groups, a factor that may jeopardize the efficacy of the research and limit its potential for generalizability. In response to this constraint, the IRC seeks to hire 5 Oromo and Somali speaking translators to help bridge the communication gap and ensure that mentor trainings and introductory meetings achieve their objective.

Scope of work
The 5 translators will undergo a training conducted by the Senior Research Officer (SRO) to understand the objectives of the RCT. The translators will be briefed about the architecture of the trainings and the introductory meetings, and what their exact roles will entail. The translators will be hired on need basis to ensure comprehension of training materials and efficiency of introductory meetings for the 550 Horn of Africa refugees expected in the research.

Qualifications
• Post-Secondary Education, Certificate/diploma in International Development, Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics, Community Development, or a related field. (certificate in English proficiency will be an added advantage).
• Minimum of 6-months’ experience conducting translations/transcriptions
• Experience working in refugee contexts
• Excellent in-person interviewing skills
• Strong verbal and written English/Swahili communication skills
• Approachable personality and patience to connect with clients and to address their unique needs
• Flexible approach to the changing nature of work and ability to adapt to rapidly changing work demands and expectations
• Very strong attention to detail
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within the team
• Computer skills, especially Ms Word
