About the Company

JOB DETAILS:
Communications Officer, works closely and under the supervision of Mercy-USA’s HQ Director of Communications and Public Affairs, is responsible for organizing, creating and supervising acquisition of visibility products from all Mercy-USA’s projects in East Africa.

The position holder will supervise the remote field stations’ efforts toward content gathering, including tasking our selected field station photography teams with regular assignments. He/She will serve as the source pipeline of information, field narratives, photography and videography from remote field stations to Mercy-USA’s headquarters in the USA.

Communications Officer will curate quality visibility products for institutional partners, private donors and local media. He/She will write press releases for local media and establish and maintain working relationships with local journalists and media outlets to increase visibility of Mercy-USA’s work in E Africa.

He/She will organize and maintain a catalog of field narratives, project information and photography. Communications Officer will visit field stations in Kenya and Somalia on a regular basis.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • BA in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or other related degree
  • Excellent writing skills—samples required
  • Fluent English and conversational Somali required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Bridge required,
  • InDesign experience a plus
  • Proficiency with digital photography—samples required
  • Videography skills are preferred.
  • Strong grasp of social media tools and techniques
  • Experience working in Somalia
  • Experience working in humanitarian and international NGO context desired
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to lead and manage remote teams
  • Can demonstrate good organizational time management skills
  • Willingness and ability to work in harsh conditions
  • Strategic thinker
  • Assertive and result oriented
  • Sensitive to deadlines and proven ability to work under pressure
