Help Duties
Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site :Incumbent must be able to work independently, setting daily work assignments with other biological technicians. Additionally, incumbent will be working with interns, government research partners and specialists. Incumbent will carry out the exotic plant control program using chemical, manual, mechanical and biological application techniques and removing diseased trees. Work varies from standing, walking and hiking over rough terrain carrying a three-gallon backpack sprayer to pulling or cutting exotic vegetation. The main focus will be herbicide treatment of noxious weeds and mechanical removal of woody fuels. Other duties may involve plant identification, vegetation monitoring, biological control collection and distribution. The use of standard pesticide and biological control field and safety equipment will be required as well as the use of global positioning systems (GPS units), computers, cameras, and on and off-road vehicles. Incumbent will be required to operate an ATV on a daily basis for herbicide applications. The incumbent will also assist with the removal of burrowing mammals from archeological sites within the park. This will include using mechanical techniques and the data collection associated with it. These duties have gained additional importance and may have precedence at times. Possession of a North Dakota Pesticide License or other states pesticide license which can have reciprocity is desirable but not required for qualification. An opportunity to take the North Dakota Pesticide exam will be given.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial: Position will serve as lead for up to 3 GS-05 Biological Science Technicians. As lead, the GS-06 position will have a role in identifying priorities and assigning duties in coordination with supervisor. Major duties will include noxious weed treatments and mapping using various GIS equipment and software. Existing trail monitoring and maintenance. Wildlife surveys to include raptors, bats, and other species of interest. Plant surveys and mapping. Erosion control and monitoring. Data collection, management, and archiving. Working in a team environment. Duties will vary throughout the season depending on time of year and shifting priorities.

Scotts Bluff National Monument: There are two biological technician positions to fill at this base park that will perform different sets of duties. Both positions will be field-oriented for a significant portion of the time, so candidates should be prepared to tolerate the conditions of the summer in a semi-arid mixed grass prairie habitat and to hike from vehicles / roads to field sites. (1) This technician will be responsible for implementing the field operations associated with a study seeking to explore the relationship between the burrowing activity of pocket gophers and the incidence of two invasive species of annual brome grass: cheatgrass and Japanese brome. This study will be directed and managed by an affiliated USGS researcher who explores issues associated with the conservation management of public lands. While the specifics of this study are still under development by the researcher, this project will involve field work at three parks that are about an hour driving time from each other via fleet vehicle: Scotts Bluff NM (SCBL), Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO), and Fort Laramie National Historic Site. (2) This technician will serve as a field assistant to the Natural Resources Program Manager at SCBL and AGFO. Major emphases of this position will be invasive plant surveillance and control, working with traveling monitoring teams that will collect biotic / abiotic data at the parks, and the continuing inventory of species in the natural areas. Experience with the identification of animal and plant species, treatment of invasive vegetation with herbicides, use of GPS, and performing other field tasks in a professional context is preferred, but we will train candidates as necessary.

• Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
• Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
• Government Housing: Maybe available atMount Rushmore National Memorial only.
• Nebraska pesticide application certification/license required at Scotts Bluff National Monument after entrance on duty date.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/03/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience: Have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal service. The specialized experience required is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work involving biological science support such as: collecting, analyzing and processing samples, performing laboratory work, assisting in the management of field projects, collecting, processing and managing field data, and performing habitat restoration through management of exotics and/or native planting. Use statistical methods and procedures to perform testing of field data collected. Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment (tools, sampling and monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment) prepares graphs, charts, and illustrations for reports and technical publications relating to plant management activities. Assist in the development of improved methods of controlling weeds and plant diseases or other related work etc. You must include hours per week worked.

Education: Have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: Graduate education meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One (1) year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
