Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division engages with governments and other partners to develop and promote ecosystem-based solutions for sustainable development. This assignment is in the Biodiversity and Land Branch, Ecosystems Division.
This assignment is intended to support UNEP’s Biodiversity and Land Branch in delivering on the program of work, specifically coordination processes for operationalization of the Nature for Health Fund and design of new projects.
The Individual contractor will undertake the following duties:
• Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects; monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identify and tracks follow-up actions.
• Perform consulting assignments, in collaboration with the Branch Coordinator, by planning workshops or other interactive sessions and assisting in developing action plans.
• Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources.
• Prepare various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
• Provide support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, as well as administrative support etc.
• Coordinate activities related to budget and funding and prepare related documents/reports.
• Perform other duties as required.
The IC will work under the supervision of the Head of the Branch.
Qualifications/special skills
• Academic Qualifications: First level university degree in management, natural resource management or economics, conservation science or a related subject is required.
• Experience: A minimum of 1 year of responsible work experience in project/programme support in the environmental sector; especially in biodiversity conservation issues is required.
• Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is an added advantage.
