Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Special Assistant, Law Division, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
• Conducts research on a diverse range of assigned issues in environmental law and governance, including environmental rule of law, Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, and other areas of progressive development of international environmental law, using multiple research sources; selects relevant material, analyses information and presents findings for internal review.
• Assists in the preparation and finalization of various materials including studies, correspondence, background papers, speeches, and briefing notes; compilation of inputs for reports; and preparation of publications and other outreach materials on selected environmental law themes.
• Assists in the preparation of legal and procedural advice on a wide range of environmental law issues related to the work of UNEP.
• Assists in servicing diplomatic conferences, commissions, committees, task forces and other bodies, including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, etc.
• Assists in the organization and support of events on environmental law, and Multilateral Environmental Agreements, and other meetings and workshops that are organized by the Division or in which the Division is involved through, e.g., preparing the agenda, liaising with participants, assisting with the virtual set up where needed, compiling materials, preparing presentations, taking notes.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required experience
• 5 years of experience in international public law, especially environmental law, and related area at the national and/or international level
• A first-level degree in combination with qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
Languages
• English, Level: Fluent, Required
Required education level
• Master degree or equivalent in international law, environmental law, or related field is required.
