Associate Legal Officer - Administration of Justice, P2, Nairobi
The position of Associate Legal Officer - Administration of Justice is located in the Legal Affairs Service (LAS). The incumbent normally reports to the Senior Legal Officer - Administration of Justice. The Associate Legal Officer will assist the Senior Legal Officer with the following duties: - Conducting legal research. - Drafting legal proceedings such as briefs and motions. - Preparing examinations and cross-examinations of witnesses. - Preparing legal analyses with regard to management evaluation requests. - Drafting legal opinions, recommendations and other documents relating to disciplinary cases. - Reviewing and providing comments on draft policies. - Negotiating settlements and mediating on behalf of UNHCR. Effective interaction with colleagues and concerned parties internally and externally is of paramount importance.

Duties
- LAS is provided with high quality legal research, analysis and presentation of key information to facilitate decision-making. - Appropriate policies, guidelines, procedures and processes are consistently applied. - Conduct legal research on a diverse range of assigned issues in international law and other areas of specialization such as international public service law using multiple research sources. - Select relevant material, analyze information and present findings for internal review. - Assist Senior Legal Officer in the review of legal documents, instruments, or other material. - Identify important issues, similarities and inconsistencies, etc. - Assist in the preparation of drafts of background papers, legal opinions, recommendations, reports, etc. - Assess the relevance or admissibility of evidence gathered by investigators. - Assist in representing the Organization before arbitral and administrative tribunals. - Assist in providing legal advice on human resources matters. - Assist in reviewing administrative decisions. - Perform other related duties as assigned. - In close consultation with the Senior Legal Officer, draft legal opinions, recommendations and reports. - Provide legal advice on human resources matters. - Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Education & Professional Work Experience Years of Experience / Degree Level For P2/NOB - 3 years relevant experience with Undergraduate degree; or 2 years relevant experience with Graduate degree; or 1 year relevant experience with Doctorate degree

Relevant Job Experience Essential A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing. Membership in a Bar or qualification to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
Desirable Knowledge of French is strongly desirable. Thorough understanding of the UN system. Strong ability to conduct legal research on a range of complex and intricate issues. Experience in drafting a broad range of documents of a legal nature, including legal opinions, pleadings, contracts and briefing notes. Demonstrated ability to provide oral briefings on complex legal issues to legal and non-legal audiences.
