JOB DETAILS:

The Judicial Service Commission is established under Article 171 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, with a mandate of promoting and facilitating the independence and accountability of the Judiciary and the efficient, effective and transparent administration of justice.
VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
POSITION: LEGAL RESEARCHER (LR)

Job Reference Number: V/No.6/2022
Number of Positions: Thirty-Six (36)
Terms of Service: Three (3) year Contract renewable Subject to satisfactory performance
Gross Salary Scale: Kshs. 123,750– 190,000 p.m.

Job Purpose:
A Legal Researcher is responsible to a Judge or Judicial Officer(s) in carrying out Research work for the Judges or Judicial Officer(s) performing the Judicial functions

Reporting Responsibilities:
The job holder is responsible to a designated Honourable Judge or Judicial Officer
Area of Deployment: Court of Appeal, OCRJ, High Court, ELRC Court, ELC Court or Magistrate Courts

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
i. Analyzing pleadings and appreciating their tenor and effect;
ii. Examining the detailed content of the facts and decisions of the Courts;
iii. Taking stock of the full tenor and effect of the submissions made in the Courts;
iv. Collecting and collating all relevant authorities– those emanating from counsel and, any other relevant material;
v. Conducting extensive legal research and writing for the respective Judges and Judicial officers;
vi. Drafting bench memoranda and well–researched opinions on various legal and factual issues; and
vii. Preparing pre–trial and post–trial media summaries.

Job Requirements: Academic and Professional Qualifications
For appointment to this grade, the applicant must have: –
i. Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from a recognized Universities
i. Post graduate Diploma in Law
iii. Be an Advocate of the High Court with a current practicing certificate;
iv. Membership to Law Society of Kenya
v. Proficiency in Computer applications

Experience:
Be an advocate of High Court of Kenya of at least three (3) years standing

d) Copies of admission certificate to the roll of advocates, testimonials, professional certificates and academic transcripts;
e) Applicant’s recent coloured passport size photographs (2 No.); and
f) Five (5) samples of any professional writings, including but not limited to judgments, advocacy submissions in courts, scholarly writings or any legal publications that the applicant has authored.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit valid clearance certificates from the following bodies during the interview: –
• Kenya Revenue Authority
• Higher Education Loans Board
• Directorate of Criminal Investigation
• Ethics and Anti–Corruption Commission
• A recognized Credit Reference Bureau
• Recommendation from the relevant Professional Body, as the case may be, as being in Good Standing
• Advocates Complaints Commission
• Law Society of Kenya
