Global Health and Nutrition Director

ROLE PURPOSE:

We are seeking a transformational development / humanitarian executive to lead our Global Goal on Healthy Start in Life. Taking advantage of Save the Children's vast network of program experts and global footprint, this global leader will use innovation, technology, data, and research to ensure that Save the Children stands as a state of the art institution working with children and their communities efficiently and effectively. This position will provide an unparalleled opportunity to implement the cutting-edge of development, humanitarian and human rights theory and practice across a network of 100+ countries and 25,000 staff. This includes helping Save the Children become effectively localized, data-driven, productively partnered, a powerful advocate, and to stand as one of the world's most recognized voices in the defence of children’s right to a healthy life everywhere.

This is the most senior Health & Nutrition role in Save the Children. This role has overall accountability for the quality and impact of our Child Rights Programming (Service delivery, system building/policy/Advocacy, and civil society/partnerships) in Health, Nutrition, and WASH programmes and advocacy across Save the Children, promoting programme innovation and drawing on and contributing to the best global evidence on what works to guarantee children’s rights, and particularly their right to a healthy life.

As part of Save the Children’s 2030 Ambition, the organization has chosen to inspire three Breakthroughs in the way the world treats children, so that every child, and especially those suffering from inequality and discrimination can Survive, Learn and be Protected. The 2030 breakthrough ambition that is led by the Health & Nutrition area is that children under 5 do not die from preventable causes.

This role will lead organizational efforts to achieve one of our four goals (healthy start in life) in our 2022-24 strategy for children, working to ensure that:

  • Children have a healthy start in life
  • Children go safely back to school and learn
  • Children live free from violence
  • Children benefit from safety nets and resilient families

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Global Leader in health and / or nutrition work and strong external global network.
  • Education to Master’s level, with a qualification in public health or nutrition required. MD highly required. Phd desirable.
  • Technical familiarity with Health, Nutrition, and WASH programming up to an Accomplished level, with leading edge expertise in at least one sub-thematic area.
  • Inspirational leader with ability to communicate the vision for the Breakthrough
  • Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated experience in motivating large direct and indirect teams
  • Significant international development and humanitarian contexts experience designing, implementing and evaluating programmes relating to Health, nutrition and WASH and other relevant child rights programming.
  • Thorough knowledge and track record of influencing Health and Nutrition public and programme policy, and other relevant child rights programming, in development and humanitarian contexts.
  • Demonstrable ability to engage effectively across internal/external stakeholders and communities
  • Knowledge of policy, research and evidence-based methodologies with regards to Health, nutrition and WASH programming, and other relevant child-focused programming.
  • A clear understanding of and commitment to inequality and anti-discriminatory practice eg gender and disability analysis in informing programmes and policy.
  • A combination of technical, research, public advocacy and, local experience.
  • Understands that work of development and humanitarian action can be complex and volatile.
  • Country level experience in international development, preferably through long-term assignments.
  • Proven experience delivering results and outputs
  • Energy and drive to create change in a large complex organisation
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching – ability to work with people of all levels from CEO to junior staff and across all functions,
  • Experience creating and managing high-performing teams including building shared objectives, quality control, evaluation, motivation, performance management, staff development and training.
  • Commitment to building and supporting a diverse and inclusive technical leadership team
  • Demonstrates ability to make technical expertise relevant and available to inform programs
  • Engaging with donors and public finance stakeholders across humanitarian, development and developed contexts.
  • An understanding of and commitment to Save the Children’s mission, values and programme approaches.
  • Fluent spoken and written English

Director Global Communications & Engagement

ROLE PURPOSE:

The role holder is responsible for leading Save the Children International’s Global Communications and Engagement team. This entails working closely with stakeholders across our global federated organisation, strengthening Save the Children’s engagement with the public, supporters and staff and helping drive one consistent voice across Save the Children. 

A key focus for our Ambition for Children 2030 is to develop a Movement of Millions. Through a digital first approach we aim to identify new audiences, grow and strengthen our supporter engagement work, while accelerating both our financial and non-financial support from individuals, companies and institutions.

The Director will provide global leadership to our communications and engagement work, overseeing the Global Communications and Engagement team, working closely with the peers in the extended leadership team including; Director of Global Campaigns, Director of the Global Fundraising Hub, Director of Global Policy and Advocacy and the Director of the Global Media Unit. The role holder will drive excellence in marketing and brand communications and lead our integration efforts across our global supporter engagement work. Key responsibilities will include bringing together our global communications and engagement team (creative content, brand, digital and communications) to drive world-class supporter experiences, to accelerate income generation, drive supporter actions, increase our brand strength and engage our own people.

Additionally this role will inform and connect strategic initiatives through representation on the SCI extended senior leadership team and the development of a Global Communications and Engagement strategic framework.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Proven communications and engagement leadership at a senior level, in a complex, global organisation, with the demonstrable ability to work in a networked organisation, influencing others through ‘soft power’
  • Proven success in developing and implementing communications and engagement strategies that deliver increased income and campaign impact
  • Extensive experience in impactful digital first communications approaches to integrated public and supporter engagement, which can drive global fundraising and campaigns efforts
  • External environment and sector understanding: being able to advise senior leaders on the impact of decisions made
  • Experience of leading, driving and utilising insight informed approaches to engagement, including consistent testing / analysis to inform first-class integrated supporter experiences across fundraising, engagement and campaigns
  • Extensive experience building and profiling organisation’s to generate cut through in a crowded market and build brand equity
  • Change management leader with proven ability to build teams
  • A track record of successful project management in a complex organisation, with a proven ability to forge consensus and drive action
  • Ability to lead teams, providing professional direction, inspiration, high standards of performance and championing standards and developing team members
  • Experience of building personal networks at senior levels, resulting in improved engagement
  • Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in
  • Significant experience of managing staff with different backgrounds and expertise and building and developing their performance
  • Willingness to travel overseas for up of 15% of the time
  • Ability and passion to work in a culturally diverse setting
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s values and ways of working
