Consultancy for survey firm recruitment for data collection in Kenya

CONSULTANCY DESCRIPTION

This call is for a short-term consultancy to recruit a survey firm (“firm”) to conduct primary data collection in Kenya. Data collection is tentatively expected to happen after the main coffee harvest season (January-February 2023) and will focus on Mt Kenya region. Data will be collected using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI).

The firm will be responsible for the following main activities: listing; programming of survey tools; survey staff training; data collection from coffee growing households (Coffee Producers Survey); workers/laborers engaged in coffee production (Workers Survey); and cooperatives engaged in coffee production, processing, and/or marketing (Cooperatives Survey); and clean and format data per project requirements. Before the data collection, the firm will conduct a listing exercise and develop a sampling frame for the respective target population to be interviewed using structured questionnaires to be developed by the project team.

SCOPE OF WORK 

The firm will be primarily responsible for the following tasks with input from project partners. The firm will also support project partners with other relevant tasks as necessary

  • Manage the overall planning and implementation of the various surveys, including recruitment and training of experienced survey staff, overseeing data collection, performing data quality checks, cleaning and producing datasets in the required format (e.g., Excel and Stata)
  • Conduct listing exercise, clean listing data, prepare sampling frames, and conduct random sampling
  • CAPI programming, testing, and translation as necessary
  • Contribute to the preparation of survey training materials
  • Deliver survey staff training  
  • Provide regular update during the data collection
  • Deliver final clean dataset and survey implementation report
  • Deliver financial and other supporting documents as necessary

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR SURVEY FIRM 

  • Strong track record of conducting complex and large-scale quantitative agricultural household surveys
  • Experience in collecting and managing sensitive information
  • Have a qualified team of local staff fluent in local language
  • Able to provide adequate logistical resources to organize, train, deploy, and supervise survey staff
  • Proficiency in English and local language

We are thus prioritizing individuals and firms and enumerators who are fully vaccinated if vaccines are widely available for the general population. If vaccines are not widely available, we will ask for rapid antigen tests for enumerators/lead and give preference to rural based experienced enumerators to reduce Covid-19 transmission from urban to rural areas.
