JOB DETAILS:
Aquaculture technician for small-scale ‘garden’ tilapia pond
Aquaculture technician required to advise on design, installation, launch and running of small-scale tilapia farming operation for family use. Location of the site and work is in Nairobi.

Activities
Advise on:
• Sizing of pond based on client’s current needs and future growth plans.
• pond placement taking into consideration aesthetics and landscaping requirements of the client, as well as sun exposure, gradient, surroundings trees, etc.
• Design and construction of pond to ensure zero leakage, while minimizing construction and long-term maintenance costs.
• Water inlet and outlet systems to both maximize water use efficiency, water circulation and use in adjacent vegetable garden.
• Water management systems to ensure well-aerated, clean water, advising on both widely-used modern filtration systems as well as aquaponic systems.
• Preparing bill of quantities for the project, and advising on reputable companies for pond construction, water management systems, fish stock and feed supply.
• Sourcing fingerlings and establishing the first crop.
• Detailed schedule for on-going fish management and pond maintenance procedures.
• Undertake periodic reviews of the operation, advising on measures to improve fish health and harvest quality.

Experience
• An undergraduate degree or diploma in aquaculture or related discipline.
• At least 5-years hands-on experience in building and managing high-quality aquaculture operations.
• Knowledge of cutting-edge water management and filtration technologies, including aquaponic systems.
• Deep knowledge of and contacts with reputable aquaculture suppliers in Nairobi.
• Knowledge of other species aside from tilapia is a plus, such as catfish and freshwater shrimp.
• Fully computer literate.
