Learning Support Consultant

Position Summary

Students in AKES, K schools have a range of backgrounds, interests, talents, and needs that require recognition, understanding, and support if every student is to become a successful learner.  To further improve student outcomes, priority must be given to supporting the learning of each child regardless of ability.  To that end, the position of Learning Support Consultant has been created. The role of the Learning Support Consultant will be to enhance the ability of teachers to deliver high-quality education using responsive pedagogy and inclusive teaching methods; provide learning support leadership across AKESK; facilitate the development of policy, systems, and support; training for teachers to differentiate learning according to needs and support students who require either short- or long-term assistance with their learning.

It is expected that the Learning Support Consultant will work closely with school leaders and teachers to effectively model, team-teach, provide feedback, and coach to improve pedagogy with a particular focus on students who require learning assistance as well as work directly with students.  

Key Responsibilities 

Design and facilitate/lead the implementation of an AKESK learning support program policy, assessment mechanisms, and appropriate pedagogies to include:

  • Identification - A system to identify children who require support and/or with learning needs using the school's existing data as well as creating new processes as needed
  • Teacher Training - A comprehensive, planned approach to teacher training and support to promote differentiated teaching that supports the range of student abilities. These training modules should be grounded in international best practices and local contextual dynamics and practice
  • Student Support - A focus on individualized and group support to children with learning differences both within and withdrawn from classrooms. 
  • Target setting and Monitoring - A system for setting targets, monitoring, and tracking learning/progress using individual, class, and school-wide assessment tools including consideration of admissions and promotion policies. 
  • Individual Education Plans â€“ a system for students with learning needs and high achievers which includes facilitating teacher and parent meetings, management of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and overall student advocacy.
  • Intervention â€“ Develop a system to identify and provide specific recommendations and interventions for addressing literacy and mathematics deficits.
  •  Gifted and Talented - A system to provide consultations and appropriate interventions and support for students identified as gifted and talented.
  • Home-school Partnership - To inform, guide, and enable parents to support their child’s development
  • Technology - Keep up to date re.: developments as well as support implementation of assistive/adaptive technologies.
  • Resources â€“ develop a bank of physical and online resources aimed at supporting students, reinforcing and extending learning
  • Professional Development - Keep up to date on curriculum developments and trends in the field of learning disabilities and upskill staff as appropriate

Key Deliverables: 

  • A clear, usable Learning Support Program developed to include systems for student tracking, monitoring, and feedback
  • Workshops held for staff and parents to enable seamless implementation of the program
  • Teacher professional development and support mechanisms in place which result in more differentiated teaching
  • An Active Learning Support Community of Practice (LCP) developed at AKES, K
  • Improved student learning outcomes

The requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education/A post-graduate degree in Education from an accredited university
  • Good understanding of, and experience in, curriculum management, design, implementation, and evaluation
  • Understanding of 21st Century education practices, strategies for raising students’ achievement
  • Experience in the developing world and Africa are highly desirable
  • Candidates currently in Kenya will require TSC registration

Digital Literacy Trainer – Part-Time Basis - 3 Positions

Role Summary

AKES, K, has a program to develop the staff on the modern technological trend to enable them to deliver high-quality education. The role of the Digital Literacy Trainer is to take lead in this technology upskilling program. It is expected that the lead shall provide classroom/ practical (Lab) training programs to teachers, which include but are not limited to computer and online essentials, use of ICT in education, promoting online safety, collaboration, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver instructor led ICDL sessions, monitor learners’ progress during training, and provide support and advice to enable the learners to become competent users of technology.
  • Enhance the ICDL training documentation to provide in-house support to meet the training needs of the learners.
  • Keep up to date with self-paced technical training initiatives to competently deliver ICDL user courses.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least Bachelor’s Degree in ICT, Education, or Instructional Technology.
  • Certified ICDL trainer.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in training.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, organize, manage, and complete training programs for staff at various levels of knowledge.
