The Dedan Kimathi University of Technology-Centre for Biomass Energy Studies (CBES) is working on a project aimed at improving water and energy resource efficiency and circular production in tea processing in Kenya. The University wishes to advertise for the following vacant positions;
2. Water Resource Mapping Consultant.
i. Project Background
Tea processing is water intensive. The tea factories therma energy system being steam based, it basically means significant amount of water is consumed hourly to generate steam. End of manufacture wash-down is also major water consumption activity. Some studies put water consumption at between 6 and 10 tons of water consumption for every ton of made tea produced.
With no industry benchmark, it is not possible to tell if the sector is water efficient or not.
It is expected the project will generate data on water consumption, consumption share by section and ultimately generate industry standard/benchmark.
A database populated with data on water utilization and performance indices is a powerful tool for monitoring tea sector water consumption and trends. It is expected it will be the reference point for sectoral players, researchers, policy formulators and planners interested in water issues in tea sector.
ii. Expected Deliverable
a) Tea factories water consumption data (including consumption levels, patterns and quality) and benchmark generated in selected tea factories.
iii. Job description
Working alongside CBES staff and reporting to the Centre Director, the expert will be expected to apply an already developed Water Resource Mapping Methodology to carry out the mapping project. Specifically, the consultant will be expected to carry out:
a) Desktop analysis of water supply and consumption data.
b) Field visits to select tea factories to collect primary data.
c) Regular meetings with tea factories staff and other stakeholders
d) Generate tea industry water consumption benchmark(s).
e) Disseminate information on tea factories water consumption and benchmark(s) to industry
stakeholders through various platforms.
f) Develop data collection tools for indices.
g) Develop an Excel based database on water consumption in the mapped sector.
h) Sign off agreements with data sources (tea factories) on sharing of data.
i) Monitor traffic to the website hosting the database (downloads, number of users).
iv. Qualifications
a) Minimum bachelor’s degree in Civil/Mechanical/Mechatronic engineering or Renewable Energy Technologies. Higher qualifications will be an added advantage.
b) Training in resource efficiency (RE) and circular production (CP) or circular economy (CE) or Environmental Management (EM)

d) Must have at least five years (5) technical expertise in resource efficiency (RE) and specifically water utilization and efficiency improvement projects in tea industry in Kenya.
v. Project duration
a) 1st June 2021 up to 31st December, 2021(60 project man-days)
