JOB DETAILS:
Primary Purpose:
Safe Space Project Officer-Livelihoods will support and oversee Safe Space project activities to promote self- reliance among LGBTIQ refugees in Nairobi Metropolitan through business skills development, resource building, and income generating activities and provision of seed grants under the guidance of Safe Space Program Manager in accordance with the guidelines, policies and procedures of CWS Africa. CWS Africa may, in its sole discretion, appoint/second you in such other capacity as it may require from time to time, provided that it falls within your capabilities.

Essential Duties:
The Project Officer will be responsible for the following tasks:
1. With support of M & E coordinator conduct livelihoods assessment including baseline survey among LGBTIQ refugees to collect detailed demographic information.
2. Identify, verify and profile LGBTIQ refugee project beneficiaries within the Nairobi metropolitan through the use of developed selection criteria to participate in livelihoods project activities.
3. With the support of program Manager hold initial/introduction meetings with LGBTIQ refugees and LGBTIQ refugee-led community Based Organizations (CBOs) and organize for project take-off.
4. Train LGBTIQ refugee-led CBOs on group dynamics and leadership.
5. Train LGBTIQ refugees on business and entrepreneurial skills, financial literacy and marketing.
6. Train LGBTIQ refugees on alternative livelihood opportunities such as poultry farming.
7. Provide information to LGBTIQ refugee beneficiaries about livelihoods and business development opportunities.
8. Provide livelihood guidance, on an individual or group basis, to increase beneficiaries’ awareness of different business options based on market assessment and beneficiary interests.
9. Work with the line manager to provide seed grants to both LGBTIQ refugee-led CBOs and individuals for business start-up while ensuring that minimum standards are met.
10. Support procurement of poultry, sewing, sandal making, hair and beauty, craft work and beadwork machines and their distribution to LGBTIQ refugee-led CBOs.
11. Link up LGBTIQ refugees led CBOs to micro-credit finance institutions to acquire credit to expand their business and/or network with financial institutions to establish and increase micro-credit linkage.
12. Link up LGBTIQ refugee led-CBOs and individual to markets to be able to sell their products and/or network to build market linkages.
13. Facilitate LGBTIQ beneficiary exposure visits to other businesses/enterprises in Nairobi and environs.
14. Provide ongoing technical support to LGBTIQ refugee-led CBOs and individuals to strengthen their business enterprises.
15. Develop and submit weekly activity work plan and reports and contribute to compilation of the monthly Safe Space Program activity reports.
16. Assist in maintaining records of all activities, in order to complete timely reports for Safe Space Program and for external actors, including donors.
17. Identify LGBTIQ refugees with psychosocial and protection needs and link them up with referral services.
18. Develop knowledge management resources for the livelihoods project and disseminate lessons learnt.
19. Contribute to fundraising efforts through contributions to concept note and full proposal.
20. Represent CWS in partner meetings and other stakeholder forums and events as may be required.
21. Perform any other role as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications:
Experience:

• At least three years of prior work experience implementing livelihoods project(s).
• At least three years of prior work experience in a related field (e.g. livelihoods, small business management and working with LGBTIQ people).
• Prior experience working with refugees or asylum seekers and/or knowledge of local laws regarding asylum and refugee protection.
• Prior experience working with local government agencies, NGOs or community-based organizations, and/or UNHCR is preferred.
• Prior experience as a trainer or facilitator is preferred.
• Three years of experience working with people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
• One year of project management experience, including: developing work plans, monitoring project activities, measuring project results, and/or writing reports to funders or other stakeholders required. Prior experience working with LGBTIQ individuals, or on community-based projects related to human sexuality and gender is preferred.

Skills:
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Strong time management skills
• Fluency in English.
• Computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office

Education & Certifications:
University degree in a relevant field (e.g. Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Sociology Community Development or Social Work).

Special Requirements:
• COVID Vaccination is strongly recommended for all successful candidates
• The candidate should be of good health, willing and able to travel extensively in often difficult conditions, and have a high degree of flexibility. Must have proof of Yellow Fever vaccination before traveling for RSC Africa.
• This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya
• This position requires use of laptops at all time, competence in Microsoft office packages is required.
• This position may require travel in sub-Saharan Africa on short notice and under sometimes difficult conditions to meet demands of a dynamic operational program
• Background check which includes references and an educational check and Certificate of Good Conduct is required before the start of employment.
• A valid passport and the ability to maintain a valid passport throughout the entire appointment is required, which includes having enough passport pages for travel.
• Physical: This position requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, pushing/pulling, handling objects (manual dexterity), reaching above shoulder level, using fine finger movements and lifting/carrying heavy loads.**
• Environmental: Incumbents in this position will be exposed to excessive noise, marked changes in temperature and/or humidity, dust and infectious diseases, harsh weather climates, long work hours, bumpy roads, extended travel, excessive sun exposure, and non-ventilated spaces.
• The US Embassy rates Kenya as both HIGH in crime and HIGH in terrorism. Incumbents should fully understand the insecurities present within Kenya and the region.**
