JOB DETAILS:
Title: Research Manager
Location: Ideally one of PxD’s country offices in India, Pakistan, Kenya, or Ethiopia; remote working option considered
Salary: Commensurate with experience

PxD is looking for a driven, creative and independent person to join a high-performing, flexible and non-hierarchical team as Research Manager. The successful candidate will have opportunities to work closely with PxD and affiliated researchers and substantially contribute to PxD's research programs that test new ideas and measure their impacts. The successful candidate must have a strong interest in and commitment to PxD's mission to leverage technology to improve the lives of the poor at scale.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are located in Kenya, India, Pakistan and Ethiopia.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
• Work with relevant PxD country teams, researchers, and research affiliates to manage the implementation of research projects and ensure that projects adhere to policies, procedures, and timelines.
• Provide guidance and oversight to Research Associates on research activities, including survey design, data cleaning, power calculations, and preliminary analysis.
• Work closely with PxD researchers and our partner organizations to identify, develop, and launch new research projects, and ensure technical rigor.
• Guide program teams on the use of evidence-based approach and contribute to the building of institutional knowledge of the evidence base.
• Manage partner relationships with external stakeholders for implementation of field operations.
• Manage research project budgets and resourcing plans and implementation.
• Take lead on preparing Institutional Review Board applications and modifications with oversight from PxD researchers and research affiliates.
• Conduct literature reviews and other desk research to inform research activities as well as programmatic functions for PxD.
• Contribute to internal and external communications to disseminate research findings including briefs, blogs, reports, and presentations.
• Assist with proposal development for prospective funders and partners, alongside other PxD team members.
• Support PxD in developing processes to maintain the integrity and the quality of research.
• Stay abreast of the latest research related to mobile phone-based agricultural extension and current landscape of other organizations and companies operating in the mobile phone-based agricultural advisory space.
• Contribute to PxD institutional knowledge management and internal learning efforts.
• Contribute to other management and strategy tasks important for PxD’s functioning and success – including but not limited to recruitment and strategic planning – on an as-needed basis.

Qualification and experience in the following domains are important:
• Master’s degree in economics, agricultural economics, public policy, or a closely related field (we may consider exceptional candidates without a Master’s degree who have extensive experience in experimental research in developing countries)
• Professional experience working on at least three large projects involving design and management of rigorous research and/or evidence-based program in developing countries
• Adept at consuming large amounts of academic and scientific literature as well as other technical information, synthesizing key findings, and applying takeaways to program and research design.
• Deep understanding of economics, econometrics, statistics, and randomized evaluations.
• Excellent knowledge of Stata or R or similar software for data analysis.
• Experience working on field research in economics in developing countries.
• Experience managing program and/or research staff.
• Experience managing partnerships with an implementing organization.
• Understanding of research ethics for human subjects in the social sciences.
• Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Fluency in English. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work under time pressure and solve problems creatively.
• Willingness to travel to project sites and conduct field work (when the Covid-19 pandemic allows).
