JOB DETAILS:
Research Fellow at The Africa Hub
The Africa Hub (a consortium of organizations lead by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)), seeks to hire a Research Fellow to strengthen its work in the Horn of Africa region.
The Horn of Africa is experiencing uncertainty characterized by civil instability, ecological extremes, economic stress, and prolonged humanitarian emergencies. There is political stagnation in some countries, and relapse into conflict and crises in others. Proxy wars and interstate tensions are, once again, the hallmark of regional politics. The vortex of superpower rivalry and competition around the Red Sea is also destabilizing the diplomatic consensus. Within this context, the Covid-19 pandemic, migrant locusts, and erratic ecology have layered over prevailing conditions, clouding the once optimistic outlook. No regional government or body, or continental and international multilateral agencies have succeeded in tempering these negative trends. In fact, many agencies appear to have been paralyzed by the crises. Lastly, misinformation, disinformation, and fake news have confounded attempts at establishing a credible account of the true extent of the dilemma.
The Africa Hub intends to update its programming to make it consistent with anticipated and recent political and economic developments in the region. We are therefore hiring individuals who will help us better prepare for these regional trends. Below are the specifications:
The Research Fellow
The successful Fellow will form part of The Africa Hub Team and provide programmatic, research and analytic support across the Consortium’s partners, including in dispersed geographical locations. The postholder will work closely with subnational and national organizations, in-country as well as with regional entities. The role provides all-round insight into the operations of The Africa Hub and focuses on analysis of regional political-economy trends, program management including monitoring, evaluation and learning, and policy work. More specifically, the post holder will be responsible for the following:
· Oversee or conceptualize and conduct research, write analyses, briefs, and reports, and make presentations on Horn of Africa geopolitical dynamics before internal and external audiences.
· Continuously monitor and analyze trends and dynamics in the Horn of Africa region.
· As necessary, provide on-sport insight into emerging trends in the region, and or alert Consortium partners to significant impending issues.
· Participate in country or regional risk analyses and contingency planning when called upon.
· Represent The Africa Hub in meetings, conferences, and symposium whenever called upon and as necessary.
· Lead in providing programme management support to The Africa Hub and Consortium partners, from planning to execution of strategies and activities, to monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
· Design cutting edge research and analysis curricular as well as resource guides for strengthening engagement with civil society organizations in the Horn of Africa.
· Grow networks and manage partnerships at national, subregional, and international partners, including with multilateral organizations and funding agencies.
· Contribute to The Africa Hub communication by synthesizing large volumes of data and technical analytical reports, translating them into products for the consumption of diverse audiences.
· Coordinate Consortium partner activities at subnational, national levels, and regional levels.
Requirements
· A postgraduate qualification in conflict studies, political economy, or related social science fields.
· At least five years’ experience in conflict research, peacebuilding, and policy analysis. This should include knowledge of or experience using open-source information monitoring, research, and analysis tools.
· Ability and penchant for exceptional and analytical thinking, and to synthesize large volumes of information on a short notice.
· Knowledge of contemporary policy dynamics and political developments in the Horn of Africa, and the peace and security institutional terrain in the region.
