RESEARCH FELLOW / ASSISTANT COUNTRY DIRECTOR (fixed term) The British Institute in Eastern Africa seeks to appoint a suitably experienced early career researcher to the post of Research Fellow and Assistant Country Director (RFACD), to be based in the Nairobi office on Laikipia road, Kileleshwa. This is a full time, research active 3-year post. Applicants should have completed a PhD in the last five years on a regionally relevant topic within the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. Applicants should have developed a potential research project that will contribute innovative and policy-relevant scholarship in the humanities and social sciences as they concern Eastern Africa, and Africa more generally. Under the leadership of the Kenya Country Director, the successful candidate will play an active role in the academic and administrative running of the BIEA headquarters in Nairobi. .

Job Responsibilities:
• Conducting research in his/her own field of specialisation of strategic relevance to the BIEA, carrying out field work or other research activities, and publishing peer-reviewed and popular output (including on our website and social media). A research budget is available, and the successful applicant will be expected to apply for external research funding.
• Contributing to the academic environment of the BIEA by support visiting researchers and our academic partners with information and advice. Encouraging a collegiate and dynamic academic environment by, for example, organising for such researchers to give BIEA seminars during their visits and be involved with workshops and training programmes being run by the BIEA.
• Work with our Laikipia partners (IFRA, RVI, PROCOL and CRC) and our Nairobi partners (Nairobi University, Kenyatta University, Strathmore Business School and Jomo Kenyatta University to develop joint academic activities.
• With the Kenya Country Director, organize a BIEA conference each year, as well as regular seminars and workshops at the BIEA. These events are well attended by wide range of local academic and interested individuals. This will be done in close collaboration with the Publicity Manager, Research Projects Manager and Research Support Officer.
• Play a key role in our student and graduate training and experience programmes. The BIEA runs a Graduate Attachment Scheme and an Undergraduate Volunteer programme. The RFACD will be expected to participate in the selection of successful candidates, the organization of work and the mentoring of these individuals to ensure maximum benefits. They will also be expected to assist the students in organising student conferences and workshops.
• Represent the BIEA at various administrative and academic meetings and conferences, and work with the Publicity Manager to ensure our website contents is correct and up-to-date.
• The RFACD would be expected to contribute to the administration of the BIEA and deputise for the Kenya Country Director when necessary.

  Further Particulars: A gross salary of between 160,000 - 190,000 KES will be offered, depending on experience
