Research Assistant - Lab Technologist, Department of Haematology and Oncology
Job Summary
This position is required to contribute to collection, handling and processing of biological samples, as a member of a multi-disciplinary research team of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and/or Department of Haematology-Oncology.
Requirements
• Certificate in Phlebotomy or equivalent
• Higher national diploma in medical laboratory science
• IATA certification
• CITI / Research training
• At least 2 years working experience, preferably in a CAP accredited
• At least 1 year of experience in research
• A team player
• Strong communication skills (written and oral).
• Strong organizational skills
• Keen attention to detail
• Innovative
• Strong self-initiative while working as part of a team
• Ability to handle stressful situations and meet deadlines
• Culturally sensitive
• Empathic
• Good patient care and support skills
Responsibilities
• Obtain vital signs from patients
• Collect blood samples from both in-patients and out-patients
• Perform coagulation screening for causes of bleeding disorders
• Receive clients and collect blood for the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and/or Department of Haematology-Oncology units.
• Ensure that correct test entries are made and correct tests are charged to the patients or research study.
• Ensure that appropriate samples are received and delivered to the appropriate laboratory with relevant details both on specimen bottles and request forms.
• Attend to patients queries.
• Distribute samples to respective sections in the system, as necessary.
• Follow up on patient results
• Correspond with main Hospital laboratory and research study representatives
• Process, store, and ship samples, as per research study protocol, the Hospital and regulatory policies/guidelines.
• Documentation of patient and sample data on internal and external paper/electronic forms
• Track all samples from collection to shipment
• Assist research team in the acquisition of patient data
• Port access of patients with ports
• Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
• Participate in continuous medical education.
