JOB DETAILS:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable town and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The position is located in the Land, Housing & Shelter Section of the Urban Practices Branch (UPB) within the Global Solutions Division (GSD), Nairobi duty station.
The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.
The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production centre of the UN-Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practices and is the operational level responsible to undertake technical cooperation projects, such as the construction of water and sanitation facilities, shelter and other work
The Land, Housing & Shelter Section is responsible for providing professional skills and developing normative knowledge and products that support a) the equitable supply of serviced land at scale; b) efficient and effective land management systems; c) freedom from arbitrary or forced eviction and the protection of security of tenure for all; d) the progressive achievement of universal access to housing meeting the requirements for an adequate standard of living; e) participatory urban regeneration and slum upgrading initiatives.
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: .
Responsibilities
•Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
•Performs assignments in planning and facilitating participatory housing design workshops and assisting in developing the action plan for the project to manage the change.
•Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
•Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends of housing policy development, housing design and sustainable buildings and construction, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
•Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
•Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
•Provides substantive support to meetings, conferences, etc., which includes proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
•Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics and activities.
•Participates in field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
•Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents and reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
•Performs other duties as required.

• PLANNING & ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Education
• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in architecture, social, environmental or political sciences, or other urban development oriented studies with focus on urban poverty reduction is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. Experience with the UN or other international organization is desirable.
Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
Assessment
• Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

This is a project post. Appointment against this position is for a period of one year and may be subject to extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.
