Akina Mama wa Afrika is a Pan-African feminist organization with headquarters in Kampala, Uganda, dedicated to improving the political, economic, social status of African women, through enhancing their individual and collective leadership capacities.
Role Summary
The Program Officer – SRHR contributes to the realization of AMwA’s SRHR portfolio that underscores bodily autonomy and choice as the cornerstone of SRHR. The Officer will promote innovative practices in SRHR rooted in feminist principles, strengthen the advocacy capacity of CSOs, and support in lobbying and advocacy to widen the civic space for SRHR across five African counties. .

Key roles and responsibilities
Strategy, program planning, and implementation
• Provide support to annual program planning processes and implementation of the activities under SRHR
• Assists in carrying out field supervision of programs with guidance from the SRHR Justice Lead
• Provide support in the development of program concepts and plans in the area of SRHR
• Conduct regular program support and monitoring visits to partners
• Produce timely outcome-based reports for both internal and external use
• Support in developing funding proposals and other fundraising activities
Feminist leadership development and capacity building
• Support in building the capacity of women’s rights organizations and activists to enhance their knowledge to inform their engagement in SRHR
• Coordinate with relevant partners the annual African Women Leadership Institute (AWLI), public lectures and follow up on action points.
• Provide support in capacity assessments and capacity building of partners
• Nurture innovative practices in intersectional SRHR advocacy;
• Contribute to the development of guidelines for integrating intersectionality within AMwA and partner CSOs, and facilitates peer-assessments between partner CSOs

Documentation and feminist analysis
• Provide support in assessing trends and systematic change relevant to SRHR
• Generate body of knowledge on SRHR through research, feminist analysis, and documentation.
• Participate in the dissemination of results of research projects to internal and external constituents through a variety of avenues.
• Nurture networks and alliances with academia, and research institution
Movement building and advocacy
• Conduct policy analysis to complement community-level data by assessing relevant multi-sector national, regional, and global policies through an intersectional lens and influences decisions for improvement in legislation
• Contribute to lobby and advocacy to widen the civic space for African women in all their diversity, and works closely with the other teams to amplify and sustain voice as they demand the realization of their Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights
• Identify strategic networks and alliances with a diverse mix of civil society and institutional actors, at community, (sub) national, regional and global levels and from multiple sectors, and works with like-minded organizations, and creates coalitions to embrace intersectional approaches to SRHR
• Build and strengthens alliances with SRHR actors and advocates with other traditional and non-traditional SRHR allies and partners
• Represent AMwA and participate in network and alliance meetings, events, and fora at national, regional, and international levels
• Ensure effective information flow and communication with other stakeholders including partners and international teams

Qualification / Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Political Science, Philosophy, and Humanities Gender, Law or any other relevant discipline.
• A minimum of 3 years experience in a similar position advocating for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of marginalized groups.
• Evidence of thought leadership through writing blogs, papers, opinion pieces, etc, and engagement in panel discussions is strongly desired.
• A proven commitment to women’s rights activism and demonstrable experience in social justice or human rights broadly;
• Solid technical knowledge of/expertise in SRHR using a feminist frame of analysis.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior writing skills and public engagement;
• Ability to organize and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders;
• Ability to communicate and work effectively in English.
• Competency in French will be added an advantage
• A critical understanding of and deep commitment to feminism, social justice, and human rights issues facing women and girls worldwide.
• Demonstrated commitment to the Charter of African Feminist Principles
• A high level of self-awareness, sound judgment, self-care, passion, and flexibility
• Ability to multi-task under limited supervision
