Summary of the role
The Partnerships Manager is responsible for implementing the partnership and engagement strategy and to optimize the relationships with partners. The role will report to the Director of Programmes and will be based in Nairobi.
Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Africa is a high-profile initiative originally developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Indian Education NGO Pratham to promote evidence-informed education programming in Africa. TaRL Africa, now headquartered in Kenya, works to improve basic reading and arithmetic skills of children on the African continent through the TaRL approach. We aim to reach 3 million children in the next five years. Key countries of operation include Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Zambia where we work on contextualizing the TaRL approach.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develops and implements a Partnership and Engagement Strategy that optimizes relationships with partners that are key for advancing Action Plans in alignment with the overall strategic goals – these include bilateral and multilateral government aid agencies, local government, civil society organizations.
• Develops and manages partnerships with governmental, foundations and private donors at central level, and supports partnerships at country level
• Support, build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with high potential donors.
• Proactively lead networking efforts to identify funding opportunities and partnerships.
• Support TaRL Africa to explore the partnership potential of strategic corporate engagements,
• Research and maintain an overview of key partnerships and opportunities for the realisation of TaRL Africa strategic goals.
• Ensures that all relevant staff follow the Partnership and Engagement Strategy and best practices for engaging with donors, and work closely as a team to optimize synergies to ensure overall Fundraising and partnership satisfaction.
• Support the Programs Director in managing partnership relationships by organizing meetings, preparing presentations and documents and doing the research needed to help a Programs Director to target potential funding.
• Provides support, backstopping, guidance and training staff in partnership matters at all levels;
• Performs other duties as assigned by the line manager
Profile:

Required Functional Skills
• Master’s Degree in Business Management, Development Studies or related fields;
• Proven track record in successfully managing inter-institutional relations, preferably in the development field;
• At least 5 years professional experience in inter-institutional relationship management;
• Knowledge and experience of the realities of development issues, donor institutions, and the not-for-profit sector;
• Experience in managing or engaging with multi-organization partnerships or consortiums involving implementing NGOs
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Excellent oral and written communication skills French (advantageous)
Required Behavioural Skills
• Excellent understanding of development partnerships and international relations;
• Excellent interpersonal skills, and proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships, negotiate/mediate on issues, chair meetings and resolve conflicts;
• Strong cross-cultural skills and versatility in dealing with different types of partnerships;
• Personal integrity with an honest and open personal style;
• Approachable, and an ability to engage partners at all levels;
