Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya and New York, NY that combats urban poverty and gender inequity in the slums of Nairobi. Kennedy Odede, who grew up in the Kibera slum, founded SHOFCO in 2004 with a focus on youth and gender empowerment.

Pharmacy Technologist

Job Purpose

To be responsible for checking prescriptions to ensure that there are no errors, dispensing medications by compounding, packaging, and labelling pharmaceuticals and ensuring that they are appropriate and safe for the individual patient and providing advice on the dosage of medicines.

Position Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Verify, interpret and process orders and prescription.
  • Dispense drugs and counsel patients on the proper use of drugs dispensed.
  • Take part in supply chain management to ensure that essential stocks are available in the pharmacy at all times.
  • Monitor stock levels of drugs and place orders when necessary.
  • Keep appropriate documentation for accountability and research needs.
  • Conduct continuous medical examination sessions relating to drugs and other health care products.
  • Monitor storage conditions i.e. expiry status and security of the pharmaceuticals.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Diploma in Pharmacy

Professional Qualifications

  • Enrolled member of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board
  • Member of the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association

Nutrition Officer

Job Purpose

To be responsible, by working in close collaboration with the MOH nutrition team and community health volunteers, for the screening activities of severely malnourished children and provide an integrated, comprehensive nutrition package that partly involves one-on-one nutritional counselling and assessment; with the aim of helping our clients lead healthy lives.

Position Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Take a lead role in developing the clinic’s nutrition program at both technical and administrative levels.
  • Provide nutrition assessment for special needs clients and those identified at high nutritional risk and develop and implement dietary-care plans and nutritional counselling.
  • Advise patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans and diet modifications, including food selection and preparation.
  • Capacity build health workers and the community on nutrition programmes/ interventions.
  • Develop nutrition outreach tools, such as pamphlets or other materials.
  • Provide nutritional outreach in the community via classes, health talks and collaboration with other SHOFCO programs.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Diploma or degree  in Nutrition and dietetics

Professional Qualifications

  • Registration with the Kenya Nutritionist and Dietetics Board (KNDB)

Other required qualifications (unique/job specific)

  • Knowledge of fitness program and sports nutrition
  • At least 1 years post registration experience in a busy health facility

Nurse

Job Purpose

To be responsible for providing holistic nursing services to outpatients by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care in health facilities and community.

Position Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Assess patients’ general condition to determine patient care.
  • Support Clinical Officer as required during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
  • Ensure that all required observations, prescribed treatment and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient’s charts.
  • Prepare equipment and ensure examination rooms are clean and stocked with required supplies and materials.
  • Refer to the Clinical Officer relevant information such as patient’s status and laboratory results, which would assist in proper clinical management.
  • Participate in community health surveys/campaigns and in training of community health workers.
  • Administer prescribed medications, injections and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Act as a link between clients and different program areas to include CCC, ANC, PNC, nutrition, family planning.
  • Conduct follow up home visits for clients with special cases.
  • Work together with CHW and social worker to reach out to missed appointments and defaulters.
  • Ensure timely and correct, timely data entry and completeness of data tools to include; prophylaxis, ART, PMTCT, HEI, TB, IPT and any other relevant tool.
  • Co-ordinate client support groups.
  • Co-ordinate timely reporting and ordering of supplies.
  • Maintain high quality of service provision including patient confidentiality.
  • Conduct CME’s and feedback after internal/external trainings.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Degree or Diploma in  Nursing, Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse

Professional Qualifications

  • Valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya

  • At least 1 year of post internship cumulative relevant experience in nursing

Clinical Officer

Job Purpose

To be responsible for achieve SHOCO’s health overall mandate by implementing clinical services policies at the allocated facility.

Position Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Offer health care services to patients by taking history, examining patients, carry out investigations, prescribe treatment, follow-up of patients, and give health education talks.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts and other pertinent information.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Guide and counsel patients, clients, and staff on health issues.
  • Respond to enquiries relating to patients, lab requests, x-rays, prescription requests, etc.
  • Coordinate appointments for specialist referrals, x-rays, lab tests, etc. and convey pertinent instructions and information to the patient.
  • Attend to clinical care centres patients and manage opportunistic infections.
  • Conduct continuous medical education and health educations as may be required.
  • Work with other team members and staff of other cadres in ensuring quality service provision.
  • Be accountable for any equipment assigned and report to the line manager as may be required.
  • Collect data and compile clinical reports.
  • Collect and compile data for research on clinical services.
  • Undergo coaching by more experienced clinical officers to achieve professional competences.
  • Apply the SHOFCO’s health standard treatment and patient management.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Medicine and Community Health or Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.

Professional Qualifications

  • Registered clinical officer preferably trained at KMTC
  • Registration with clinical officer’s council with Current Practicing license is mandatory

Other required qualifications (unique/job specific)

  • 3 years’ experience in a busy health facility
  • Basic HIV training/ experience
  • Ability to : Take medical history of the patient, Perform a thorough physical examination, Order appropriate investigations, Make correct diagnosis, Prescribe and treat and Do patient follow-up
  • Perform minor surgical procedures
