Regional Communications Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY

Are you passionate about human rights, motivated to make the world a better place for women and girls and willing to use communications and media skills to influence change? Equality Now is offering a great opportunity for someone to take up a Regional Communications Assistant role with our Communications Team in the Africa Regional Office. 

As a valued member of the team, you will apply your existing skills and experience whilst developing your skill set. The role will cover advocacy campaigning; communications content creation; event management and public relations - using multiple communications channels to bring about change.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Regional Communications Manager for Africa & MENA, the Regional Communications Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

General Communications

Planning

  • Help to implement internal and external communications strategies and projects.
  • Assist in the development of concept notes, event and content planners for program activities and activities in line with the communications strategy.
  • Assist in conducting research and developing products for key message distribution as needed.
  • Ahead of partner trainings and launch events, assist in the development of communications and media training plans, invitations, and agendas.
  • Assist in the preparation of contractor TORs and contracts on a need’s basis.

Media work 

Planning

  • Support in the curation of media and digital plans for key communications activities related to various program objectives.
  • Working in tandem with the regional communications team, be the activity coordinator for Africa’s editorial and content calendar.
  • Contribute to editorial planning in the medium and short-term.
  • Regularly update media contact lists.

Day to day activities

  • Take responsibility for responding to inbound in-mail requests for key countries in the region.
  • Assist in the development of key media assets such as press releases, pitches, and blogs as needed. 
  • Assist in sharing media invites and organizing media interviews with Equality Now staff in line with planned activities. This may include assisting with the development of briefing notes and quotes. 

Digital Communications

  • Assist in the creative development of high-impact social media strategies in line with various Africa-led digital campaigns.
  • Lead in planning virtual events including webinars, virtual launches, Twitter chats and Twitter spaces.
  • Lead in the development of social media toolkits and assist in designing digital collateral for use by partner organizations and key stakeholders.

Case studies

  • Assist with logging case studies and other gathered communication content for study reports
  • Participate in content gathering trips as needed.

Administrative support

  • Ensure the Africa communications work plan is up to date.
  • Arrange logistics for stakeholder trainings and events, including media-related travel.
  • Lead in the development of a reports and minutes for the communications monthly team meetings 

Essential skills: 

  • 1-2 years of working in communications 
  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • A demonstrable interest in human rights campaigning.
  • An interest in communications and external relations
  • Demonstrable experience in using social media and digital platforms for communications and advocacy.
  • IT literate, with experience using Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Ability to undertake research tasks independently.
  • Positive attitude, dependable and good sense of humor 
  • University degree or equivalent
  • Should be creative and innovative. 
  • Should be enterprising and solution driven.
  • An understanding of and commitment to Equality Now’s work and objectives.  
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Proficiency in using various social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Desirable: 

  • Previous experience writing high-quality copy.
  • Previous experience leading social media campaigns and engagements.
  • Good understanding of running social media channels.
  • Basic graphic design knowledge.

Institutional Giving Officer

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Institutional Giving Officer will help to grow and diversify the institutional funding for  Equality Now across Africa, the Americas, the MENA region and Asia. Reporting to the Global Institutional Partnerships Manager, the post holder will serve as an integral member of the Development team, and help Equality Now achieve its mission by increasing funding from foundations, as well as bilateral and multilateral agencies.

The position requires close collaboration with the Program, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Finance Teams. The role requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to synthesize technical details into a compelling narrative, a respectful and team-oriented working style, and a talent for understanding and responding to donors’ interests.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently manage a portfolio of funders, including ongoing stewardship of existing grants and renewals.
  • Support all aspects of the grant management process including timely submission of reports and other required grant deliverables, contract management and donor liaising;
  • Coordinate proposal design and reporting processes involving staff from different departments to comply with donor requirements;
  • Act as a primary point of contact and/or support relevant program staff in maintaining timely and effective communication with donors and prospects;
  • Work with colleagues throughout the organization to “package” funding opportunities, program overviews and impact updates for donors, as needed.
  • Research and track relevant grant opportunities and prospective institutional donors to support our global work across the organization’s thematic priorities;
  • Lead research, vetting, outreach and cultivation efforts with prospective donors;
  • Coordinate and, at times, lead meetings with institutional donors and prospects to showcase Equality Now’s work and impact;
  • Help maintain data and key performance metrics to assess progress toward funding goals for the grants portfolio, including revenue projections;
  • Maintain donor files and update the database and other tracking documents.
  • Identify and recommend solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of grants management across the organization; 
  • When necessary, oversee consultants supporting institutional fundraising as assigned;
  • Coordinate and communicate with partners and stakeholders for proposal development and reporting processes   
  • Help build the capacity of colleagues to support development efforts, specifically on donor engagement, proposal development and grant management

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Passion for social justice issues, particularly women’s and girls’ rights and gender equality; understanding of the law is a bonus;
  • Minimum of five years of experience in grant writing and institutional funding, particularly with bilateral and multilateral donors;
  • Experience working on complex, multi-year, grants with institutional donors, including governments, multilaterals, and private foundations;
  • Experience in frontline fundraising with Institutional donors;
  • Written and spoken fluency in English (fluency in Arabic, Spanish and/or French is a bonus);
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Google Suite, and other online document sharing applications;
  • Experience in Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising databases and donor research techniques is a plus;
  • Experience working collaboratively with external partners in fund development;
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and accurately summarize complex ideas and large amounts of information;
  • Advanced interpersonal skills - able to work effectively, collaboratively, and respectfully in a fast-paced environment with diverse, international co-workers in a relatively small organization;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail with accuracy;
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a dispersed team;
  • Comfort with fully remote working environment and occasional international travel;
