The KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) is based within the KEMRI Centre for Geographic Medical Research - (Coast). Our core activities are funded by the Wellcome Trust. We conduct integrated epidemiological, social, laboratory and clinical research in parallel, with results feeding into local and international health policy. 

Research Officer

JOB PURPOSE: 

To contribute to the social science research agenda within the HSRE department, including empirical ethics and health policy and systems research in global health, with a focus on Kenya. Areas of this work are conducted as part of international research collaborations. The post holder will undertake systematic and other forms of review of published and grey literature, and contribute to the planning, conduct and dissemination of findings from social science studies (quantitative and qualitative) in relation to key areas of research in the department. The broad areas of departmental focus are global health research ethics and health policy and systems research. Empirical ethics research foci may include studies based on Controlled Human Infection Models, vaccine donations, impact of COVID-19 on research studies, effectiveness of remote informed consent, approaches to community engagement in research and concepts of vulnerability in research.

JOB DIMENSIONS: KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To review and summarize issues from the published scientific literature in specific areas of interest, with a particular focus on international collaborative research in Africa; and to update this as needed over time.
  • To review and summarize national and international guidelines or policy documents relevant to foci of specific social science research projects; and to update this as needed over time.
  • To contribute to the development and ethical conduct of specific areas of social science research at KWTRP, including planning, tool development and data collection and analysis for quantitative and qualitative research, and writing scientific papers and blogs around current areas of work.
  • To contribute to the dissemination of information from the study, including through the preparation of reports, blogs and manuscripts for publication, making presentations at scientific meetings and feeding back to participants in the consultation exercise.
  • Where indicated, provide training and support to other research team members / collaborating partners in areas within these responsibilities.
  •  And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  MA or MSc in relevant subject such as Social Science (related to health), Public Health, Bioethics, Law, Nursing, Medicine or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of health research experience, ideally including at least 2 years post masters experience in collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative research data. Experience in peer-reviewed publishing will be an advantage.
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications and software for quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Senior Database Administrator

JOB PURPOSE: 

This role is responsible for create and maintain overall network plans to support the organization’s business strategy, initiating service level agreements with customers, plan and design all aspects of the infrastructure necessary to ensure provision of network services that meet such agreements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise and provide technical expertise on database development framework and processes;
  • Analyses data requirements, to establish, modify or maintain a data model and interpret model into a database schema;
  • Evaluate potential solutions, demonstrate, install and commission selected products;
  • Interact with data models, object relational database mapping and producing reports;
  • Develop and enable enterprise reporting and business intelligence services;
  • Collaborate with IT project management office, software developers and infrastructure specialists in IT project delivery;
  • Responsible for the delivery of software based enterprise wide projects;
  • Advise and support data managers and statisticians in execution of dynamic data tasks;
  • Performance tune all database environments to all systems are available and ensure the use of latest technology;
  • Conduct research on development of improved frameworks and technologies for database efficiencies;
  • Advice on department resources regarding recruitment and staffing;
  • Ensure that the appropriate disaster recovery measures are in place; and
  • Advice and review backups and recovery policies and SOP’s.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology/Computer Science or in related specialization of study; Masters degree is an added advantage
  • Relevant DBA Certification e.g. OCA, OCP, MCSD, MCSE, MYSQL for DBA, AGILE, IBM analytics, PMP, PRINCE2
  • Minimum 5 Years with 3 Years’ experience at Supervisory level

  • Strong understanding of the software development cycle;
