Fauna & Flora International (FFI) has been championing wildlife conservation in Kenya in some shape or form since our foundation in 1903. Exactly a century later, we opened an office in Nairobi and established a formal country programme, since when we have been supporting local partners to protect key habitats and species. In particular, we have played a crucial role in establishing among others, Ol Pejeta and Sera Conservancies; and the Northern Rangelands Trust.

WILDLABS
Launched in 2015, WILDLABS is the first global, open online community for conservation technology. The WILDLABS online platform enables conservationists (including those based in the field) to connect directly with technology experts, to explain the challenges they face and source technological solutions to these problems. Connecting with users on the ground also helps technologists to test their ideas in field environments, and to adapt them to ensure maximum possible impact. The mission of WILDLABS is to catalyze collaboration to accelerate the development and scaling of technology solutions for conservation impact. The collaboration’s vision is that affordable and effective conservation technology is available to everyone working to secure a sustainable future for our planet.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Ol Pejeta Conservancy (OPC) works to conserve wildlife, provide a sanctuary for great apes, and to generate income through wildlife tourism and complementary enterprise for reinvestment in conservation and communities. With support from Fauna & Flora International and WILDLABS, Ol Pejeta has established a Conservation Technology Lab to field test new conservation technologies and build capacity in the conservation sector for using conservation technologies and incorporating them into decision-making, planning, project delivery and monitoring activities.

The Opportunity
FFI is offering a paid internship for a 12 month period from August 2021-July 2022. This internship will support the operationalization of the Sat4Wildlife project at WILDLABS and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a project aiming to increase integration, use and adoption of satellite-enabled conservation services and applications within the Kenyan conservation sector. Building on an initial capacity needs assessment completed in early 2021 and stakeholder engagement activities in the project ‘Discovery Phase’, this internship will be a facilitator for a network for conservation technology in Kenya. The intern will establish a hub for Kenyan conservation technologists on the WILDLABS Platform, develop content and resources to engage and support the community, and plan and coordinate a programme of events (including networking and knowledge exchange workshops) to facilitate knowledge exchange between Kenyan conservation and technology actors, and the global community on WILDLABS.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and pro-active individuals with proven interest in the following areas:

We require team players with ability also to work on their own initiative. They will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise across teams and cultures.

Terms and Conditions
Start Date: 1 August 2021 (or as soon as possible thereafter)
Duration of Contract: 12 months
Probation Period: One month
Monthly Stipend: KES 45,000
Location: Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya, with travel within the country as required.
Benefits: 25 working days’ annual leave entitlement plus national public holidays observed in Kenya
Hours of Work: This is a full-time position, working Monday to Friday from 8.00a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. These hours may vary depending on the requirements of the job in the field.

Role Summary
The internship will be with the WILDLABS Programme at Fauna & Flora International, and will be physically hosted at the Conservation Technology Lab at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya.
The intern will work on the Sat4Wildlife project, which aims to increase integration, use and adoption of satellite-enabled conservation services and applications within the Kenyan conservation sector. The intern activities will draw on a capacity needs assessment and initial stakeholder engagement activities delivered in the Sat4Wildlife Discovery Phase, to connect a network of conservation technology practitioners in Kenya and facilitate knowledge exchange, collaboration and the development of knowledge resources to support the effective use of conservation technology. The intern will:
1. Establish a network for Conservation Technology in Kenya, supported by a virtual hub on the WILDLABS platform and in-person meetings/workshops at the OPC Centre of Excellence. The intern will set up the Kenyan Conservation Technology virtual hub on the WILDLABS platform. They will develop and deliver a plan to launch of the community of practice, identifying and engaging key stakeholders, organising meetings, surveying this network to determine training priorities and developing a strategy of engagement and training (inc. resource development) to grow this network.
2. Responding to networking, knowledge exchange and training priorities identified by key network members, the intern will plan and deliver a blended (in person and virtual) training/lecture series, potentially like the WILDLABS Tech Tutors Programme. This series will support capacity building and knowledge exchange between Kenyan conservation and technology actors and the global community on WILDLABS. All activities will aim for equal representation in gender in terms of speakers and participants.
3. Research and develop additional resources (e.g. best practice documentation, technology guidance, etc) to support uptake and effective use of technologies for conservation applications specific to Kenyan environments and challenges. Identify knowledge and innovation gaps through desk research, distributed surveys of key stakeholders in network and facilitated workshops (supported by WILDLABS and OPC teams) that could be addressed by partnerships with technology experts in the conservation technology network in Kenya and strategic partnerships
The intern will also work with the WILDLABS team to support the research and engage global conservation technology community as required.

Essential:
• Post secondary qualifications; Diploma / Higher National Diploma in conservation, wildlife management, community development or related field
Desirable:
• Degree in a related field
• Technical training in IT
• Some level of knowledge of emerging technologies

Skills:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), including ability to liaise across teams and cultures
• Ability to plan, organise and prioritise workload
• Fluent written and spoken English

Knowledge and experience:
