Job title: Industry Associate: Textile and Apparel, Environmental  Sustainability

Directly Reports to: Director - Textile and Apparel

Role Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Job purpose 

This role will work within Msingi's Textile and Apparel team and will contribute to interventions focusing on Environmental Sustainability and compliance. The role is expected to contribute to identifying sustainability and compliance aspects of the industry program and contributing to the design and inclusion of environmental safeguarding, cyclicality, and sustainability in the program's activities. The role holder will be guided by the sector strategy of the program and the overall market development guidelines and standards of Msingi East Africa.

 

Duties and responsibilities 

1.Analyzing constraints, opportunities, and other characteristics of the Textile and Apparel industry East Africa, in light of sustainability and compliance 

2.Collect data, synthesize, and present results on industry compliance and sustainability standards, initiatives, trends, and current best practices 

3.Participate in the design and implementation of interventions streamlining sustainability and compliance components 

4.Managing contractual relations with companies, consultants, and partners as part of the intervention implementation 

5.Engaging and building relationships with industry stakeholders for example, industry associations, private sector representatives, government counterparts, investors etc. as and when needed 

6.Working closely with the director and the rest of the team in monitoring the progress of interventions and changes in the industry

 7.Undertaking regular field visits to collect and synthesize information to understand end to end industry dynamics and levers of change 

8.Any other duties relevant for the development of the industry as requested from time to time

Minimum Qualifications and Skills 

Education & Certifications

A minimum of an undergraduate degree, ideally in economics, environmental science, industrial/environmental engineering, or related fields from a national or international university with a good reputation 

Experience

At least 3 years' relevant work experience. Relevant manufacturing sector, Textile and Apparel and development sector experience, delivery of sustainability and compliance initiatives is appreciated but not required.

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills 
  • Proactive, creative, and entrepreneurial attitude 
  • Ability to analyse data and other sources of information, probe for further information, make rational judgements from the available information and analysis, and understand how one issue may be part of a larger system. 
  • Good communication and relationship building skills. 
  • Ability to produce high quality written documents. 
  • Quick learner and inquisitive Flexible to work across different functions and sets of responsibilities. 
  • Adaptable and able to respond quickly to change.

Terms and remuneration 

The contract for this work will be permanent and full-time. The job will be based in Nairobi with some local and regional travel. The salary will be competitive and is negotiable depending on experience.
