JOB PURPOSE
Design and manage learner centred, deep learning and innovative human rights education programmes that builds an inclusive anti-discriminatory national movement response to gross inequalities, corruption, and impunity and support institutional performance, learning and staff development within the context of a leaderFULL culture. Supporting the two significant pillars of the National Strategic Framework 2021-2023, this position shall utilise online and physical platforms, opportunities, and resources to inform and build capacities for proactive public based campaigns with circles of conscience, citizens, civic partners, and key state agencies.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Manage the Human Rights Education team by ensuring overall team effectiveness, actively managing performance, team welfare, recruitment, and onboarding, learning and development and liaising with the Admin team on administrative issues relating to the respective staff.
2. Manage internal initiatives that deepen an internal leaderFULL culture, staff well-being, talent development and impact learning supported by the Office of the Executive Director and human resource advisory services
3. To design, manage and evaluate formal human rights learning programmes that delivers Amnesty International Kenya curriculum for activists who seek to transform inequalities, discrimination, and marginalisation
4. To design, manage and evaluate coaching, capacity-building and resources support to Circles of Conscience Convenors, human rights defenders and activists who seek to transform inequalities, discrimination, and marginalisation
5. To provide thought-leadership on human rights education and policy engagement with external constituencies including Amnesty International Working Groups, the state, civic associations and other stakeholders by initiating research ideas, inform mass and new media opportunities and education-based policy dialogues
6. Fundraise and effectively manage the Human Rights Education budget while ensuring cost effectiveness and alignment to project activities with no significant variances.
A change-maker with a passion and understanding of human rights, you will ensure all Amnesty campaigns and actions are underpinned by our theory of change by:
1.Representing Amnesty and actively promoting the values and obligations contained in the constitution and international human rights standards and covenants.
2. Leading in and participating in proactive and rapid response campaigns and actions
3. Managing Amnesty resources towards significant impact with an eye for value for money, integrity and humility.
4. Recruit, coach and significantly expand relationships with staff, volunteers and members that leaves them enlivened, active and empowered to act on human rights issues.
5. Shape Amnesty’s research and public positioning in policy dialogues, public events, social and mass media engagement.
6. Identify, nurture, and expand collaboration with a core group of like-minded projects, institutions, duty-bearers, persons at risks, communities and human rights alliances, partners, and other civic organisations.
7. Support and drive online and off-line training and other empowerment tools, spaces and methodologies that supports the emergence of active, empowered, and ethical circles of conscience nationally
8. Engage and support other Amnesty initiatives nationally, regionally, and globally to build comparative understanding and synergies across the Amnesty movement.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
ESSENTIAL
1.Commitment to Amnesty’s organisational values and vision and Kenyan Constitution
2. Familiarity with the rights-based approach, social justice, citizen empowerment and gender sensitive education and learning based approaches.
3. At least 5 years relevant experience in managing staff advocacy, education, or other public policy change management processes.
4. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff and financial resources.
5. Demonstrated ability to analyse injustice and rights violations and to develop short and long-term strategies to achieve human rights impact and change for others.
6. Demonstrated experience of working with the education sector/ social movements/ community organizing to influence duty-bearers
7. Experience of influencing civic organisations, social movements leaders and mid-level government officials, policy makers and law enforcement officials.
8. Proven ability to develop strategies and plans and review/adapt them to fast changing political situations, exercising and promoting creative thinking.
9. Demonstrated experience of organizational learning and development
10. A confident communicator with good analytical, presentation and editorial digital skills;
11. Team leadership, outstanding social and intercultural skills and proven ability to multi-task and work to deadlines, sometimes under pressure
12. Ability to operate and lead under pressure and in challenging situations; and take quick and firm decisions.
DESIRABLE
1.Experience of interviewing and dealing in an appropriate manner with witnesses and survivors of human rights violations especially in responding to education rights denial, neglect and mistreatment of young people both in and out of educational facilities.
2. Experience of independently coaching volunteers to manage impactful and fully integrated campaigns through the complete campaign lifecycle (issue identification, strategy development, campaign delivery, monitoring, campaign exit and impact assessment)
3. Demonstrated expertise or qualifications in public education, curriculum development, participatory adult learning, online and face to face empowerment learning approaches
4. Experience of leading several teams simultaneously and contributing to setting priorities, motivating oneself and others, and resolving team conflicts.
5. Demonstrated extensive and professional use of social media (Twitter, Facebook among others).
