The position
The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKESK) operates 11 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides Nursery to Senior Secondary Education in both the National and International curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

The Aga Khan Academy Nairobi (AKAN)is the only International Baccalaureate (IB) school in Kenya authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). With over 1000 students, the AKAN is a multi-cultural school with a variety of nationalities represented by our student and teaching faculty.

Head Teacher, Aga Khan Academy Nairobi Senior School

The Aga Khan Academy Nairobi, Senior School offers holistic education for students in the IB Middle Years Programme (Grades 6 to 10), and the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12), combining academic rigour within the broad and challenging curriculum with a wide range of co-curricular activities. Position Summary

The Head Teacher will be responsible for the pedagogical and administrative leadership and management of the senior academy and will support the school’s positioning as an IB World School of excellence, working towards making it an integral part of the AKAN one school vision. S/he will drive the academic and extra-curricular programmes at the school, provide leadership and oversee day-to-day operations of the school.

Key Responsibilities
• In consultation with the AKESK Leadership team, the Head Teacher will develop annual objectives, school development and improvement plan and quality indicators that ensure the delivery of high-quality education leading to strong student performance
• Monitor school, staff and student performance conduct a school self-evaluation and provide senior leaders with regular reports on progress achieved against strategic and operational goals
• Strengthen the implementation, continued performance and success of the IB curriculum and monitor the MYP action plan, enabling the school to become a model school in the implementation of this curriculum
• Ensure that appropriate systems are in place to meet and maintain authorization requirements for the IBO. Ensure systems are in place for tracking individual students and their progress through the school, and identify areas where students need additional support to ensure “no child is left behind”
• Build a high-performing team, committed to achieving the vision of the school
• Manage the budget, resources and safeguard the assets of the school, and ensure that all school funds are appropriately allocated and administered as specified in the school’s financial plan

The requirements
Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education/A post-graduate degree in Education from an accredited university, with adequate qualifications in IB Teaching
• A minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in international curriculum schools, of which, at least 5 years should be within an IB school MYP/DP leadership role
• Good understanding of, and experience in, curriculum management, design, implementation and evaluation
• Understanding of 21st Century education practices, strategies for raising students’ achievement and effective frameworks for school improvement planning, implementation and self-evaluation
• Experience in the developing world and Africa are highly desirable
• Candidates currently in Kenya will require TSC registration
