  AAH Kenya is a country programme of Action Africa Help International (AAH-I), an African-led non-governmental organisation that supports livelihood-challenged communities in East and Southern Africa to sustainably improve their well-being and standard of living. With Country Programmes in South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia and recently in Djibouti, AAH-I has over 25 years’ experience working with communities in conflict and post-conflict situations, including refugees, internally displaced people and host communities. More recently AAH-I has expanded its activities to work with other marginalised communities, including pastoralists and people living in informal urban settlements.

Purpose of the role: The Gender Officer will work on integrating and mainstreaming gender across the livelihood interventions in Turkana west Sub-County and provide expert advice on this to the respective programme managers and officers. S/he will also work on issues of inclusion of disadvantaged population groups among the refugees and host community in an effort to ensure that interventions are sensitive to these dynamics on the ground in both Kakuma Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement..

 Job Responsibilities:

• Provide technical support to the project team
• Monitoring and reporting on gender issues
• Networking and coordination
• Knowledge management and knowledge sharing
Provide technical support to the project team
• Provide advice and support to the Project Managers and the officers in the Implementation of the key gender components across the livelihood and financial inclusion interventions in Turkana west.
• Provide advice and support to the technical staff and partners working within the respective field offices.
• Analyze and ensure the interventions are sensitive to issues of inclusion of disadvantaged population groups/people with special needs.
• Support in updating and sharing with staff recent developments and knowledge tools in the areas of interventions.
• Develop training and promotional materials for gender trainings initiatives.
Monitoring and reporting on gender issues
• Monitor and report on the project related gender issues in the area bi -weekly, monthly and quarterly.
• Prepare reports on the crisis response interventions in Turkana West Sub-County.
• Provide information to be updated in Atlas for the Crisis response projects.
Networking and Coordination
• Liaise with key national and internationals stakeholders, key domestic political and civic actors, civil society organizations, international NGOs, UN partners and donors in the area to facilitate and enhance contribution towards the implementation of the gender equality agenda.
• Attend/organise gender related conferences and seminars as directed by the supervisors in the field.
• Represent AAH-I in the Protection and Sexual Gender Based Violence Technical Working Groups (TWGs).
Knowledge management and knowledge sharing
• Provide brief updates on the development of gender related issues in the region.
• Provide assistance in data collection, compiling lessons learned, establishing indicators to support knowledge sharing.
• Assist in the development of concept notes, project documents and policy frameworks and research area and gender issues for best practices as directed by supervisor.
• Participate in gender related community of practice in the region.
• Support in writing stories related to programme and project developments as they relate to gender equality issues.
• Develop a gender checklist of gender sensitive indicators to be used by all departments while carrying out their work.
• Perform other work related outputs as requested by the supervisor and the Gender Specialist.


Job Skills:
• Identifies and communicates relevant information for a variety of audiences for advocating AAH-I’s mandate
• Formulate written information clearly and persuasively
• Contributes into results through primary research and analysis
• Maintains an established network of contacts for general information sharing and to remain up-to-date
• Generates new ideas and approaches, researches best practices and proposes new, more effective ways of doing things

• Proactive, Problem solving and result oriented attitude.
• Shares information openly with co-workers and partners while using discretion to protect confidences.
• Good reporting and writing skills.
• Previous work experience with UN agencies is considered as an advantage.
• Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages.
• Language Requirements: Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili language.

  Job Qualifications:
• Master Degree in Gender studies, Law, Political Sciences, Social Sciences or related field with two years of relevant experience at the national or international level in the field of gender related projects with additional understanding of a crisis/conflict prevention and recovery approach. (or)
• Bachelor Degree in Gender studies, Law, Political Sciences, Social Sciences or related field with four years of relevant experience at the national or international level in the field of gender related projects with additional understanding of a crisis/conflict prevention and recovery approach.
