JOB DETAILS:
We are seeking a field agronomist to support on our ongoing project in the mango value chain. The field agronomist will assist farmers develop crop production plan that ensures the best way to plant, harvest, and cultivate the mango plants. The field agronomist will participate in field training on pest and fruit fly management, Good agricultural practice (GAP) by conducting need assessments, contribute towards developing training materials and ensuring the field trainings are conducted.
The field agronomist will participate in farm audits to ensure that the farmers comply with GAP and as such develop contracts between the mango farmers and the company. More importantly, the field agronomist will work towards scientifically produce the finest mangoes, in a consistent manner as they can, in the prevailing situations.
Responsibilities:
• Preparing and managing plans for crop improvement and enhanced production
• Designing and coordinating mango production for registered farmers
• Planning and managing production at the mango farms in coordination with the company for planned output.
• Ensure that the mango orchards comply with environmental quality certification
• Safeguarding environmental sustainability, safety and quality
• Carrying out land-use planning in accordance with applicable legislation
• Participate in promoting and tracking use of pheromone traps and other agricultural practices to control fruit fly.
Requirements
• A technical diploma or degree in Agricultural or Environmental Science, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Veterinary Science.
• knowledge of rural appraisal procedures, and agricultural law.
• Clear knowledge of ASAL areas including Makueni, Machakos and Kitui county.
• +3 years skill and experience in working with small holder farmers under organized cooperative societies, common interest groups or CBOs in the mango and avocado value chain.
• Training and mentorship experience of small holder farmers.
• Experience working with donor funded project will be highly desirable.
• Team player, able to work independently with minimum supervision and able to deliver in time.
• Organization and planning capabilities
• Knowledge of Agri-food chain processes
• Management skills and commercial acumen
• Ability to prepare reports
• Knowledge of/ability to use laboratory testing equipment (for chemical, physical and biological tests)
• Communication skills
• Clear understanding on quality requirements as prescribed by the government under HCD.
