Essential Qualifications
• A valid certificate in Kenya Sign Language from a recognized institution.
• Fluent in sign language both expressive and receptive.
• At least 2-3 years’ experience in Kenya Sign Language Interpretation.
• Proven knowledge and experience working with children with disabilities
• A Diploma or Degree in special needs education or related field.
• Experience in NGO sector, preferably in the area of , special needs education, child protection, and human rights programming with a special needs approach will be an added advantage


Other requirements:
• Experience in providing technical assistance to Civil Society Organizations and familiarity with government structures and processes in Kenya, particularly on children with disabilities; sign language
• Proven leadership and management skills including planning and management of trainings with a special needs approach
• A clear understanding of ethics and professionalism in sign language interpretation
• Ability to change the mode of communication to fit the needs of the individuals being served.
• A clear understanding of classroom behavior management, instructional methods and learning activities.
• Culturally sensitive, personable and adaptive.

Summary of the program
CESVI is working in East Africa since 2004 through its Nairobi Regional Office and is implementing a Multi-Donor Child Protection Program in Kenya and Somalia. CESVI Child Protection program is implemented both in Somalia and in Kenya, both development and emergency set up. Thanks to a flexible set up and an in house expertise on children focused issues, strategies and actions are coordinated among the entire region by CESVI Regional office through its field offices in rural and urban areas.
In the frame of an EU-EIDHR funded project, CESVI is the lead agency of a consortium with a local partner, Legal Resource Foundation (LRF). The action, ‘Increasing the capacity of Human Rights Defenders for the protection and promotion of children best interest in the Kenyan Juvenile Justice System in the 3 Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Kericho’, will support Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) and HRD organizations at grassroots level, improving Alternative Care services for children in contact and in conflict with the law, with a special focus on children with special needs in the Juvenile Justice System(JJS).
The long-term change envisions a strengthened Alternative Care system and awareness grounded in the best interests and rights of children separated from their families, resulting in courses of action in conformity with the principles of non-discrimination, protection, survival and participation.
Job Description
JOB PURPOSE
The Sign language interpreter will work directly on the project titled “Increasing the capacity of Human Rights Defenders for the protection and promotion of children best interest in the Kenyan Juvenile Justice System in the 3 Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Kericho” and will report to the Special Needs Officer.
The incumbent in collaboration with the Special Needs Project Officer will be responsible for mainstreaming sign language interpretation/ training with the purpose of aiding communication, workshops, trainings, seminars, conferences, events of the project through planning, implementing, monitoring and reporting of project in line with the agreed plan of action and budget, donor, and CESVI policies, requirements and procedures.


Duties and Responsibilities
Support streamlining of special needs issues in all the project activities and direct implementation of special needs trainings
• Support the Special Needs Project Officer in mainstreaming sign language interpretation/ training services with purpose of aiding communication, workshops, trainings, seminars, conferences, events and other organization events.
• Assist in development of teaching/learning material on basic sign language.
• Support the Special Needs Project Officer in implementing of sign language trainings in the three counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Kericho.
• Support in supervision, monitoring and follow up during and after the sign language training in the three counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Kericho.
• Work closely with the lead project person (Project coordinator, special needs project officer) in implementing, monitoring, reporting and follow up of project in line with the agreed plan of action and budget, donor, and CESVI policies, requirement and procedures.
• Research technical and/or complex information to actually interpret and teach basic sign language on the subject matter.
Support in supervision and monitoring of activities with a focus on special needs.
• In collaboration with the Project Coordinator, Special Needs Officer, monitor the achievement and progress towards the project objectives and expected short term and long term outcomes with a special focus on special needs;
• Support the Project Coordinator in the daily project implementation and follow-up on activities with a special focus on special needs at the field;
• In close collaboration with the Special Needs Officer, Project Officer, and the incumbent will maintain relationships with other actors at the community level;
• Support in drafting of periodical project reports on activities with a focus on special needs required by the donor, and CESVI Coordination Office;
• To perform any other task assigned by the Special needs officer and the Project Coordinator in line with the job description and employment contract.**
