Summary
The Director and Team Lead, Digital Solutions manages a global team with a portfolio of innovations including digital supply chains, health hotlines, lab sample tracking, and other patient-centered, technology-enabled health care delivery. This position plays a key role in working relationships with partners and vendors, especially technology platform providers across a spectrum of software global goods, commercial platforms, and Africa-based technology providers. Ideal candidates are experienced IT executives with a track record leading technology delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa. Eligible locations: Nairobi, Kenya; Lagos, Nigeria; Lilongwe, Malawi; Maputo, Mozambique; Kinshasa, DRC.

Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities are listed here, and other duties may change or be assigned at any time:
• Set Strategy and Lead Digital Solutions Programs (55%)
o Lead development of a digital strategy that drives forward VillageReach’s Mission, Goals & Strategies and that is in support of VillageReach’s solution and program strategies.
o Participate in funded programs with a dual goal: (1) achieve quality outcomes while (2) building skills and capabilities in less-senior colleagues. Funded programs cover a range of digital innovations for health.
o Provide oversight and quality assurance of the DS work portfolio while delegating and allocating DS staff for their program activities.
o Build skills and expertise of the team through your contribution, supervision and mentoring of others in these areas: tool evaluation/selection; digital health governance; technical architecture and strategy; technical project management; agile/lean technology innovation; and vendor relationship management.
• Build Relationships with Partners and Vendors (15%)
o Engage with technology providers and platforms, including innovative R&D leaders and emerging Africa-based technology entrepreneurs (e.g., supply chain software platforms, telecoms and MNOs, chatbot/messaging services, electronic health record systems, and digital health entrepreneurs).
o Identify Africa-based start-ups and innovators who are transforming health care delivery and establish partnerships aligned with VillageReach's portfolio. Coordinate with the Private Sector Engagement lead.
o Grow partner relationships through procurement (contracting with tech providers to innovate and deliver solutions) and through business development (jointly seeking funding to co-create solutions).
o Facilitate working relationships by establishing technical project management, governance, and collaboration/innovation processes with partners and vendors.
• Business Development (15%)
o Identify and lead selected business development opportunities. Provide strategic guidance on which opportunities to pursue and on our approach.
o Contribute and oversee business development including DS team members acting as Opportunity Owners and contributors. Contribute written narrative and budget inputs to the proposal development process.
• Develop and Lead the DS Team (15%)
o Lead recruitment and hiring of key team positions and contribute to hiring processes. Supervise and support the team’s managers and senior personnel. Manage team budgets including professional development funds.
o Establish team knowledge management and collaboration such as the Tech@VillageReach Community of Practice, the team wiki/Intranet, and forums for peer collaboration, sharing and learning.

JOB REQUIREMENTS – Director and Team Lead, Digital Solutions
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Education & Experience:
• At least 5 years in management/leadership overseeing digital/technology delivery in sub-Saharan Africa
• At least 3 years of experience in at least one of the following (more than one is a plus): digital supply chains; digital health; hotlines, chatbots or telemedicine; lab sample tracking or other patient-centered, technology-enabled health care delivery
• Experience leading technology practitioners such as software developers or managing technology deployments (experience with national-scale technology deployments is a plus)
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, ICT or a related field or equivalent experience

Other Qualifications:
• Interest in learning and working across technology-enabled health care delivery and health supply chains.
• Proven track record balancing detailed execution with strategy and partner/opportunity landscape.
• Experience coordinating between technical and non-technical stakeholders (such as software developers, creative designers, governance/policy stakeholders, project managers, business staff, and clients/customers).
• Demonstrated understanding of challenges with working in rural, underserved and low-income context. Experience living in and/or working in a low-income country a plus.
• Established cultural competency in partnering with racial, cultural and linguistically diverse groups.
• Knowledge of computer science fundamentals, software tools and concepts (such as web, APIs and mobile app development, relational databases and data analysis). Project management certification is a plus.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel) and comfortable in a fast-paced technical environment with many technologies in use.
• Fluency in spoken and written English required.
• Self-starter with strong communication skills; ability to work independently and ask for help when needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position directly supervises roughly 7 employees and leads a team of roughly 15. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; monitoring performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Environment and Physical Demands
VillageReach has no private offices, employees work in a shared, open environment with task and conference rooms accessible to employees for privacy and meetings. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Due to the time zone differences, global HQ and Country office staff are expected to be available for late afternoon/evening meetings up to 6pm.
