POSITION SUMMARY/ OBJECTIVE
The Director, Community Engagement (CE) leads strategic development and implementation of community-based projects across IFAW’s global program portfolio and provides institutional thought leadership on issues related to CE and sustainability of our work at local level, such as coexistence, inclusive natural resource governance, women and youth empowerment, sustainable livelihoods and community resilience. Working closely with the VP of Global Programs, Deputy VPs of Programs, and Regional/Country/Program Directors, this role will identify opportunities to mainstream quality CE in Programs, Communications, Development and Operations to holistically advance IFAW’s vision of animals and people thriving together.
In addition to overseeing a diverse portfolio of community work supported by restricted and unrestricted funding streams, this role will support revenue generating activities, drive external CE-focused profile building, and ensure robust systems for tracking and analyzing CE results are in place to inform institutional strategic decision making. The Director will serve as an IFAW brand ambassador in external contexts, promoting IFAW and our work as a professional expert and participating in internal and external meetings to promote prioritization of sustainable solutions for communities to lead in conservation and animal welfare initiatives.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
STRATEGIC PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION (60%)
• Identify and develop opportunities, as a subject-matter expert, for program and regional teams to advance conservation and animal welfare through integration of robust community-based initiatives
• Cross-check for strategic alignment of community-based project plans, budgets and funding proposals with IFAWs institutional strategic plan (ISP) and global community engagement strategy
• Guide strategic planning, budgeting and adaptive management of CE initiatives, ensuring sustainable approaches are imbedded in community projects and developing exit plans where appropriate
• Leads the development of annual and multi-year work plans and budgets and manages project budgets and personnel time tracking with a focus on expenditures, forecasts, and results
• Act as a technical advisor, mentor and facilitator as needed to help project field staff successfully implement their day to day work engaging local communities
• Work closely with all IFAW departments (communications, finance, development, etc.) to ensure optimal flow of information between programs and departmental teams throughout CE implementation
MONITORING, EVALUATION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEARNING (30%)
• Oversee design and implementation of community-based data collection, including baseline community needs assessments, utilizing participatory tools and approaches where possible
• Collate CE data and lessons learned across IFAW’s global portfolio to track progress, analyze trends and make strategic decisions based on learning
• Prepare and approve reports, case studies, scientific publications and other internal and external materials related to CE
• With Regional/Country/Program Directors, ensure integration of adequate social safeguards at community level and ensure there is solid institutional capacity to implement good practices
COMMUNICATIONS AND INFLUENCING (10%)
• Work with other members of the global leadership team to identify and develop outward facing strategic relationships with key global institutions to advance CE within conservation and animal welfare
• Work with Brand Marketing and Communications to ensure successful delivery of the CE Communications strategy and leverage all relevant opportunities to grow our reputation as a leader in our field
• Serve as an IFAW brand ambassador in all external contexts, promoting IFAW and all of our work

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• At least 7 years’ experience working on community-based initiatives, with significant experience guiding community engagement projects in Africa, Asia and/or Latin America
• Commitment to animal welfare, conservation and promoting IFAW’s mission in a way that also generates positive social impact
• Demonstrated expertise in participatory tools and methods, sustainable livelihoods approaches and social safeguards
• Excellent organizational and strategic leadership skills, with experience managing projects and teams across multiple global sites and proactively solving problems through diplomacy
• Ability to interact harmoniously and communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with people from varying educational, social and cultural backgrounds
