About the Job
Metropol is currently seeking a talented professional for the Database Administrator position, reporting to the Chief Information Technology Officer. The holder will manage the performance, security and integrity of Metropol’s database infrastructure. He/she will be instrumental in the planning and enhancement of the database environment for the future.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Monitor performance and manage parameters in order to provide fast response to queries.
2. Use automated tools effectively to interpret the state of databases and extract areas of improvement.
3. Take charge of writing and optimizing in-application database statements.
4. Write and optimize queries to retrieve data from MongoDB.
5. Implement a strategy for speedy data retrieval that combines relational and NoSQL data stores.
6. Map out the conceptual design for a planned database, considering both back-end organization of data and front-end accessibility for clients.
7. Refine the physical design to meet storage system requirements.
8. Carry out capacity planning for the database.
9. Implement a data warehousing strategy
10. Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
11. Generate daily, weekly and monthly reports as discussed with your supervisor.
12. Communicate regularly with technical and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security.
13. Control access permissions and privileges on production databases.
14. Maintain the data recovery aspects of a database.
15. Refine the logical design of the databases so that it can be translated into a specific data model.
16. Maintain data standards, including adherence to any data protection legislation.

Education, Qualifications & Experience:
1. A degree from a recognized University preferably in Computer Science or a related field with at least 4 years’ relevant experience.
2. Professional qualifications: Certification in any relational database system. Training in Mongo DB is an added advantage
3. At least 2 years of experience working with NoSQL data stores (MongoDB preferred)
4. At least 4 years of experience working with PostgreSQL
5. Skilled at optimizing large complicated SQL statements.

Competencies:
1. Knowledge of best practices when dealing with relational and NoSQL databases.
2. Proficient in using Git.
3. Familiar with tools that aid with profiling server resource usage and optimizing it.
4. Capable of configuring popular relational database systems and orchestrating clusters as necessary

Skills:
1. Proven ability to work under pressure and meeting tight deadlines
2. Flexible and mature approach with ability to work unsupervised
3. Ability to write code in any contemporary language is an added advantage.
4. Ability to plan resource requirements from high level specifications
