About Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya
• The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) was established in 1958 as a non-governmental organization (NGO). The overall objective of the organization is to improve the Quality of life of Persons with Disabilities through promoting Rehabilitation and Inclusion.
• Having been established in 1958, “The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya” is one of the oldest and most effective organizations for persons with disabilities in Kenya.
• Since it’s inception, APDK has assisted and rehabilitated over 600,000 persons with disabilities through a network of 10 branches and comprehensive programmers ranging from medical rehabilitation, therapeutic services, community based rehabilitation, educational programmers, vocational training, employment, self employment through micro financing and provision of appliances and mobility aids.
Duties and responsibilities
• Assisting in managing relationships with the general public, media, donors, NGOs, and APDK stakeholders
• Develop social media strategies and content for continuous sharing
• Write monthly newsletters, write exceptional stories to share through social media sites
• Participate in the preparation of website content and handling of social media platforms
• Lead APDKs communication work including social media and traditional media (website, Twitter, newsletters, youtube) ·
• Participate in implementing APDK advocacy, communication, and campaign strategies for advertising.
• Assist in preparing for events and activities by developing and assembling information and necessary materials
• Track and report on communication impacts and online analytics
• Develop regular briefs for APDK Network’s senior management on emerging issues, trends, and developments worldwide in the area of physical disability and inclusion
• Liaise with various potential donors and other stakeholders to inform them on APDK’s interventions, establish visibility and identify funding and partnership opportunities. · Identify and propose potential partners, monitor, analyze and report on donor policies and potential areas of funding
• Build and maintain positive relationships with all staff members, project partners, and contacts outside the network;
• At different times, support senior management with any other tasks as may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications
• A degree /Basic Diploma in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or related field;
• At least 3 years of working experience in the provision of communication, advocacy, and campaign services
• provide the ability to produce quality work accurately and consistently according to set deadlines
• practical experience in how to multi-task and prioritize and work independently
• strong understanding and interest in advocacy and other communication-related issues
• must be computer literate
• ability to work effectively in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds
• Knowledge and commitment to disability and disability issues and readiness to work with persons with disabilities across the board.
• Computer literate and ability to work independently.
• Experience with donor funding and reporting.
• Understand the best practices of main social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc
• Must possess exceptional writing skills and be able to compose engaging and accurate content
• Strong communicator who works well independently and with a team
• Superior time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
• Understanding of communications, public relations, and marketing best practices
• Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts
• Must be resourceful and take initiative even when given minimal direction
